Job overview

St Peter’s is proud of its history and its heart. We are a Catholic School in the Diocese of Portsmouth, located in beautiful Bournemouth close to the New Forest and Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

These are exciting times at St Peter’s. Founded on the life, teaching and example of Jesus and the 350 year tradition of De La Salle Education we are one of the largest Catholic schools in the country. We are a growing and over-subscribed mixed comprehensive school, 4 years into our 6 year journey of developing into an all-through school for 4 to 18 year olds.

Due to the retirement of our Headteacher a unique opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and inspirational individual to join St Peter’s.

We are looking for someone with the energy, drive and ambition to boldly lead St Peter’s as we complete our journey to become an all-through school; shaping our vision for the next 2 years and beyond, whilst building on the successes of the past.

As a practising Catholic with a deep rooted Catholic faith, you’ll work tirelessly to provide a safe, supportive and spiritual environment where our young people and staff thrive and become the people that God wants them to be, where all our brothers and sisters love to learn and learn to love.

A strong communicator, you’ll develop deep and meaningful connections with our whole school community inspiring our staff, pupils, parents and the wider community to continue to believe in and support St Peter’s.

And, with a passion for pedagogy, you’ll encourage great aspirations in all, motivating deep learning and exceptional progress for each and every young person here at St Peter’s.

You will also have a proven track record of astute financial acumen, developing highly-motivated performing teams who recognise and reward excellent practice and collaborative working with a range of partners.

St Peter’s is a Good school. ‘St Peter’s successfully fosters high-quality spiritual, moral, social and cultural education. Pupils’ behaviour is outstanding. So is the quality of care, guidance, and support, helping pupils become responsible young citizens. Parents greatly appreciate what the school does for their children’ (Ofsted, 2017). And our Early Years provision is Outstanding. ‘Children in Reception have an excellent start to their education, making outstanding progress’.

If you believe in the ethos of our school and have the desire and passion to lead us then we would love you to bring your drive and ambition to St Peter’s.

You are warmly encouraged to visit our school. To arrange your visit please contact the School Office on 01202 427291 or email Mrs Joy, our HR Officer, on: applications@st-peters.bournemouth.sch.uk.

Closing date for applications is Wednesday 3 April at 12 noon.

Interviews will be held Thursday 25 and Friday 26 April 2019.

Applications should be sent to Mr Richard Dickinson (Chair of Governors), c/o Mrs C Joy (HR Officer), St Peter’s Catholic School, St Catherine’s Road, Bournemouth, Dorset, BH6 4AH.

Reasonable relocation expenses may be considered for an exceptional candidate.

‘With Christ as our guide, learning together, loving God and each other, becoming the best we can be’

St Peter’s is an exceptional, oversubscribed Catholic school in Dorset on the South Coast of England close to Bournemouth Town.

The area is famous for its miles of sandy beaches which provide opportunities for water sports and beach activities. Bournemouth itself has a vibrant, cosmopolitan centre which attracts over 5 million visitors annually. The area offers plentiful choice of restaurants/cafes, theatres, comedy clubs, music venues and outdoor or indoor activities for both children and adults alike. There is also easy access to the beautiful and historic New Forest and the ‘Jurassic’ coast.

St Peter’s Catholic School is an ‘all-through’ Academy which, by 2020, will educate over 2,000 young people between the ages of 5 and 18. The school has two sites: our Primary Phase is located at Iford and the site for Years 7 to 13 which overlooks the coast at Southbourne.

St Peter’s is a school with a strong tradition of success, oversubscribed and benefitting from a deservedly positive reputation in the local community. Relationships with families are affirming and constructive, with parents and carers keen to support the school and their children’s learning. Approval ratings are very high.

We are not a complacent community; all staff are keen to learn and improve, developing pedagogy through research, shared practice and innovation. Our relentless focus on strengthening pedagogy has resulted in improving progress measures for all students at every key stage. Our progress scores are either above or, in most cases, significantly above the national average.

St Peter’s seeks individuals who are committed to:

  • comprehensive and inclusive education
  • developing their practice through collaboration with colleagues
  • delivering the best possible progress for all, by having the highest expectations

Our most recent Ofsted report graded the school as ‘good’ overall and ‘outstanding’ for EYFS and for Personal Development, Behaviour and Wellbeing.

We seek to appoint staff who are comfortable with the Catholic ethos of the school and able to support our core values. We are looking for teachers who have a clear pastoral commitment, are able to get to know their pupils quickly and tailor teaching to meet their needs. The strong Christian ethos underpins all we do. We are an Academy jointly sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth and the De La Salle Order – an international organisation which has been running schools for over 350 years.

The school opened in 1936 as a Boys’ Independent Boarding School, combining with two other local schools in 1980 to become a co-educational comprehensive school.

St Peter’s was once a specialist performing arts and sports college (when such things existed) and became an elective academy in 2011. With the growth in birth rate, St Peter’s was approached in 2012 to open a two-form primary phase and in 2014 we welcomed our first 60 Reception children. Each year we will accept another cohort until we grow to reach the full complement of primary pupils. If you are passionate about teaching and learning we would love to welcome you to join us for the next chapter of the St Peter’s story
