Job overview

Winchester College wishes to appoint an effective and inspiring Teacher of Mathematics. The successful candidate, who will be a Mathematics graduate, will be required to teach at all levels and ages; they will be able to negotiate Pre-U Further Mathematics, MAT and STEP. They may be required to contribute to the numerous extra-curricular Mathematics activities and to our outreach programme.

The Mathematics Department consists of thirteen mainly full-time teachers. Several have research degrees in various disciplines – Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics and Music – and all find the department a stimulating and collegiate place in which to work and teach. Mathematics teaching at Winchester College is assertively and unashamedly traditional, and its teachers believe that learning in Mathematics should be enjoyable, memorable, rigorous and stimulating. The Mathematics Department enjoys strong links with the Science and Economics Departments; and one of its members is Mathematics Specialist to the school’s Learning Centre (SEN). It has a flourishing and extensive outreach programme, and strong connections with local state primary, secondary schools and Winchester’s Sixth Form College.

About 110 pupils in each of the lower and upper and lower sixth forms (there are approximately 140 pupils in each of these year groups) take Pre-U Mathematics; and of these nearly half also take Pre-U Further Mathematics. In summer 2017 about 70% of Pre-U Mathematics candidates achieved a Distinction grade; in Further Mathematics this figure was about 80%. The higher sets throughout the school participate in the various activities of the UKMT, with excellent results.

The College, which was founded in 1382, is a boys’ boarding school of 700 pupils. It is committed to the highest standards of academic excellence, first-class pastoral care and the maintenance of a broad and balanced liberal education for all our pupils. Through our non-examined general cultural studies programme (known as Division) we offer an approach to education which develops an intelligent and critical awareness of the world, strong communication skills and a confident ability to think independently and with originality.

This post will appeal to excellent teachers who will relish the challenge of working with able and articulate pupils in a historic site of unparalleled architectural beauty in the heart of Winchester.

ISI report

“The school is highly successful in meeting its aims. The pupils’ achievements and learning are exceptional. Pupils achieve excellent results in national examinations and make good progress in relation to the average of similar abilities. Pupils are successful in achieving high levels in a wide range of co-curricular activities, notably in academic competitions, music and sport. They enjoy an excellent, distinctive curriculum which encourages intellectual curiosity over and above preparation for examinations. In their learning, pupils display enthusiasm, commitment and a love of reading and research. This is engendered by excellent teaching overall which widens pupils’ academic horizons and challenges their thinking. The teaching offers individual support to all pupils, including those with SEND.”
