Department Information

Abbey College is proud to have introduced a specialist Alternative Provision to our College in September 2021. This provision is designed to support some of our more vulnerable students to access a broad and balanced curriculum, when they have previously faced challenges within a mainstream setting. We require an experienced team member to support the Director of Inclusion with the day-to-day running of the facility. You will be offer bespoke pastoral care and work with students, staff and parents to raise aspirations and attendance.

Expected qualification: Degree or an expertise in Maths, English, Science or Vocational Subject.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

Reports to: 

New Horizons manager/SLT responsible for AP

Liaises with:

Pastoral Leaders, Learning Support team, SLT, teaching and support staff within the school, external agencies, pupils and families.

Purpose:

  • This post provides an excellent opportunity for tutors of Core or Vocational Subjects to become part of a very successful New Horizons team, working with students who do not necessarily follow the school’s mainstream curriculum for a variety of reasons. 
  • It might involve working in school hours, after school hours from 3:15pm – 5pm, or sometimes travelling to students’ homes to support their learning at home, for example working with students with long term health or behaviour issues that has affected their learning in school.

 Guiding principles: 

  • To focus on improving the attainment of students through 1 to 1 or small group tutoring.
  • Focus on the individual students and eliminating barriers to achievement.
  • Consistent high standards of learning and progress across the College.
  • Efficient and effective communication with all stakeholders

Key Responsibilities: 

  • To teach English/Science/Maths/PSHE/Vocational subject at KS3 and 4 levels effectively and creatively across the age and ability range, working 1:1 with students or in small groups, in New Horizons, or at the student’s home. 
  • To ensure pupils are assessed as per department and School policy and use the assessments to motivate pupils and set targets to enhance student learning.
  • To report to the Inclusion team the pupil progress so that work can be built upon in subsequent lessons.
  • To complete lesson or subject reports as needed for IAEP reviews/ PEP reviews or other internal or external reporting.
  • To follow department policies regarding schemes of work.

 Wellbeing

  • Ensure all pupils have equal access to learning using appropriate strategies and resources, where necessary.
  • Liaise with pastoral staff members to ensure the wellbeing of pupils and their full participation in school life.
  • Raise any concerns regarding pupils’ behaviour with the relevant Raising Standards Lead.
  • Implement any specific arrangements for individual pupils, ensuring that relevant staff members are aware of the measures in place.
  • Provide individual pastoral support to pupils, where necessary.
  • Continuously motivate and challenge pupils, whilst promoting and reinforcing self-esteem.

Safeguarding

The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people for whom they come into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times.  If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school they must report any concerns to their Line Manager or the School’s Child Protection Officer.  

Variation Clause

This job description will be reviewed and updated periodically in order to ensure that it relates to the job performed or to incorporate any proposed changes. This procedure will be conducted by the Headteacher or line manager in consultation with the post holder. In these circumstances it will be the aim to reach agreement on reasonable changes but if agreement is not possible management reserves the right to make changes to the job description following consultation.

 Abbey College, Ramsey is located in a small market town, almost half way between Huntingdon and Peterborough and within easy reach of Cambridge and London. The College is set within extensive, historic and beautiful grounds close to the Parish Church of St Thomas A Becket.    The College is a large 11-18 school with a catchment which extends over a wide rural area. 

There are approximately 1090 students on role, including a sixth form of 120. We currently have around 70 members of teaching staff with an additional support team of over 75 members of staff.   

We have high aspirations as a College as our 2016 results showed. Our A level and BTEC results placed us the sixth best in Cambridgeshire, outdoing many private schools, and our GCSE results were our highest ever, with a progress 8 figure of 0.21. We are also oversubscribed for the second year in a row this year by over 40% and our attendance is 2% higher than the national averages.
