Job overview

These are very exciting times for The King’s School Canterbury in China. Throughout its extremely long history, the King’s School, dating back to the year 597, has undergone many changes and maintained its position at the forefront of education. Having arrived in Shenzhen and opened a very successful Pre-Prep School (Kindergarten), the King’s School Shenzhen International, in 2019, we are now launching the next stage of our project, a Prep and Senior School preparing young people for life in this quickly changing world and delivering them to university. As an international school, we remain fully aware of our responsibilities to China and to ensuring that our local students maintain a strong Chinese identity whilst gaining a global outlook. Our state-of-the art new campus will open in August 2022 for students of all nationalities.

The new campus will accommodate over 1000 Primary and Secondary pupils (600-700 students in the Prep School)  in state-of-the art purpose-built facilities comprising: library, health & well- being centre, robotics lab, space centre, performance halls, theatre, recording studio, sports hall, swimming pool, a martial arts room and outdoor sports and play facilities, all alongside other specialist classrooms and laboratories. It will also have a sizeable five-day-a-week boarding community.

King’s offers a truly all-round education with a wide-ranging curriculum blending with the co-curriculum in a long and full school day. We borrow from the best of China and the UK but give everything our own special King’s twist with a strong emphasis upon creativity and communication. We are a performing school. A lot is therefore expected of our students who are stretched without being stressed in both their academic and non-academic pursuits.

In such an environment, King’s pledges to put student pastoral care and well-being at the top of the agenda at all times. The campus buildings and landscaping are designed with this in mind and the house and tutor system add a special level of care for all students.

The connection between Shenzhen and Canterbury (and its soon to be built school in Cambodia) is a genuine one with regular visits and exchanges between the schools planned for the post-pandemic world. In addition, we are privileged to be able to share resources and expertise, a common philosophy which focuses upon academic excellence, a wealth of co-curricular opportunity supported by pastoral care of the highest quality.

We are now seeking leadership positions alongside a range of home-room teachers and subject specialists to join our enthusiastic and dedicated team of teachers for both campuses.  We expect our teachers to believe in and put into practice our philosophy of an all-round education, based upon creative, active and interactive learning. They should also be outstanding in the way they support the children through each and every moment of their educational journey. We value teachers who are fully engaged with this approach and are prepared to be part of this very special community. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to join the school at this early stage in its development and help to lay the foundations of what we expect to be a great institution. The Head of Inclusion and Well-Being will work very closely with the Deputy Head Pastoral and have a prominent role on the school leadership team.  S/he should be qualified to set up and run and Inclusion department and should fully understand the importance of mindful reflection in the education process.

Shenzhen, China’s fastest growing city, offers a high-quality lifestyle and is an increasingly popular place to live. The city has everything from green mountains to beaches, from traditional shopping and sightseeing areas to the most spectacular shopping malls. The transport network is both easy and efficient within the city, but provides direct access to the rest of China and Asia. Our teachers enjoy a competitive, generous salary, and numerous benefits such as accommodation (for the first year with an allowance thereafter), medical insurance, 100% tuition fee remission for up to two children.

About The King's School Canterbury, Shenzhen International

Established 1400 years ago in the 6th century, the King’s School, Canterbury is thought to be the oldest continuously operating school in England and Europe. In the early centuries, the School was attached to Canterbury Cathedral and it still occupies buildings which are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The School was re-founded by King Henry VIII in 1541 and hence it was given the name ‘The King’s School’. It received a new Royal Charter from King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1946.

The famous ‘King’s Week’, the festival of music and drama at the end of the summer term started shortly thereafter, in 1952.The School has continued to evolve and modernise to meet today’s educational demands. Its new International College opened in 2018, and the first stage of the Shenzhen campus opened in 2019. It is also planning to open a sister campus in Cambodia in 2023.

The School has enjoyed a distinguished reputation and excellent academic results. It is labelled ‘outstanding’ in regular independent inspections. Every year 99% of its graduating class go on to world class universities. The King’s School Canterbury UK is not interested in multi-franchise arrangements but in a small number of quality overseas branch schools. In this way, it will be able to keep a much closer connection between both Canterbury and the overseas branches, but also between the overseas schools themselves.

Our Shenzhen school is King's first overseas school and will always have a very special connection in terms staffing, staff training, resources, policies, summer programmes, inspections and, in due course, exchanges.

Our Pre-Prep is blessed with the wonderful green backdrop of the Da NanShan – the Nanshan mountain – and the children enjoy very generous outdoor space as well as extremely well-fitted classrooms. In addition, there is an excellent library, art maker-space, a mindfulness room, a large music hall and an indoor play area. The curriculum is based on the UK’s EYFS (Early Year Foundation Stage) which allows children to learn through exploring the world and playing. Everything we do is in two languages and all classes have two teachers, one international and one Chinese and at least one TA.

Our main campus which opened in Autumn 2022, 4 kilometres away from the Pre-Prep, is designed specifically for the Prep School (Grades 1-8, UK Years 2-9) and Senior School (Grades 9-12, UK Years 10-13). State-of-the-art in every respect, it is modern in appearance and modern in the way it will meet the needs of today’s children. There are open learning and break-out spaces, both indoors and out, alongside bright and flexible classrooms with specialist laboratories, common social areas, sports, music and drama facilities. It also has a sizeable five-days-a-week boarding community.

Some of the ‘signature’ spaces include: library, health & well- being centre, robotics lab, performance halls, theatre, recording studio, sports hall, swimming pool, a martial arts room and outdoor sports and play facilities.

Our exciting pedagogy merges the best practice from the UK with that from China and comprises a strong emphasis on ensuring that academic depth and breadth, together with many co-curricular opportunities, supported by the highest standards of pastoral care.

Senior school students prepare for global university entrance through Cambridge IGCSEs and International A Levels.
