Job overview

Primary Teacher of English

MPS / UPS + SEN 1

Start Date: September 2023

Closing date: Monday 6 February 2023 at 12pm

Marshfields School is a 191-place special provision for students aged 7 – 19 with a wide range of Learning Difficulties. Previously designated for students aged 11-19 with Moderate Learning Difficulties, the change in designation in September 2021 recognised the fact that students at the school now attend due to significantly more complex needs than they had previously. Many students now have cognitive profiles below the 1st percentile, and additional needs around their health, social and emotional well-being and communication. Staff have been relentless in developing professionally to meet these increased needs, and morale is high.

Every student at the school has an Education, Healthcare Plan (EHCP) and, while delivering a curriculum that is rich and linked to the accredited courses we offer, staff work tirelessly to ensure the targets within plans are met. As a result, NEETs are unusual and relationships with colleges who receive our students are exceptional.

No moment of the school day is wasted. From arrival to dismissal, the school ethos focusses on ensuring that students are prepared for adulthood, are independent, able to request adjustments for their needs and confident in their strengths.

Having successfully introduced an offer for Year 5 and Year 6, we have now worked with the Local Authority to further extend the school’s age range. This allows us to take students from Year 3, fulfilling a local need for high needs places, and furthering our ability to meet the needs of the more complex SEND learners in the city. A capital project has taken place to support this, and this increases the size of the school from 175 places to 191.

Marshfields is a therapeutic provision, which has served to reduce behaviour incidents significantly. Systems, processes and individual plans ensure that all behaviour is viewed as communication which must be listened and responded to. Staff receive training and induction to ensure they understand the importance of the therapeutic approach to the school’s ethos and offer.

Marshfields is also a Hub Plus school for the City of Peterborough. We offer advice and leadership support for schools with MLD students on roll. This work includes providing advice on staff structure, developing reporting and meeting the needs of students with MLD in a mainstream context, supporting with SEND quality assurance processes and providing short-term activities to review student progress. This work is an important aspect of our staff recruitment and retention priority and allows close relationships with local primary schools and the Local Authority.

As a small school, staff know every one of our students individually. Supported by One Page Profiles, an important aspect of addressing staff workload, all staff can access the key information about an individual student with ease. As a result, the school community is strong, and staff are used to continually adapting their practice and teaching to meet arising need.

This is an exciting time to be part of the Marshfields community, and we warmly welcome visits and discussions from interested parties.

This is a growth position, and the successful candidate will allow us to continue to grow our curriculum provision.

This position would suit a Primary trained teacher with English as a strength and extensive knowledge of SEND. Knowledge of, and willingness to learn how to meet the needs of students with complex learning difficulties is essential.

The successful candidate will be:

• Committed to the inclusion of students with special educational needs.

• A highly motivated and effective classroom practitioner.

• Creative and innovative, with excellent communication and inter-personal skills.

• A teacher who can motivate, lead, support and challenge students to be successful.

We have a proven track record of support and development for all colleagues.

We warmly welcome visits to the school. To arrange a visit or discussion please contact the PA to the Senior Team: cararobinson@marshfields-sch.co.uk.

Marshfields School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be required to take an enhanced disclosure via the DBS which meets the requirements of the school and evidence of the right to work in the UK.

Please send a completed application form and a supporting letter of application to judemacdonald@marshfields-sch.co.uk.

We reserve the right to withdraw this advert, should we receive a strong field of applicants prior to the closing date.
