Job overview

Do you have a scientific background or interest, or do you have practical Laboratory Technician experience? Bohunt School in Wokingham is seeking to appoint a Science Technician to support teaching and learning in STEM; experience is preferable but not essential.

Key Features of the School

The school opened in September 2016 with Year 7, growing to a roll of 1200 students, aged 11-16, by September 2020, with a final phase addition of a sixth form of up to 300 to follow.

The South of England based Bohunt Educational Trust has evolved from Bohunt School in Hampshire, which is rated Outstanding in every category by Ofsted and the Times Educational Supplement School of the Year 2014.  BET's educational philosophy is encapsulated by three short verbs: Enjoy, Respect and Achieve.

Key Features of the job

The role mainly involves providing technical support, ensuring that equipment is functioning properly and is ready to use, and that the right materials are available for particular lessons. Sometimes laboratory technicians may be expected to work closely with students to explain or demonstrate experiments or how to use equipment, as well as helping teachers with a class and supporting individual students on research projects.

Some of the typical work activities are as follows:

● liaising with teaching staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and work plans;

● running trials of experiments prior to classes and then demonstrating techniques for experiments;

● preparing equipment and chemicals before lessons as requested by the teaching staff

● maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus;

● record keeping, e.g. for students' practical sessions, tracking methods, results, budgets, etc.

● ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned and that chemicals, drugs and other materials are appropriately stored;

● supporting the work of teachers in classes and laboratory sessions and giving technical advice to staff and students;

● managing the stock control of chemicals and equipment;

This is an excellent opportunity for a Science Technician to help shape the development and infrastructure of STEM as a pioneering flagship for the new school, and opportunities for career progression for the right person are extensive. Salary dependent upon knowledge and experience.

Applications will be considered as they are received.

Bohunt School Wokingham is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young students and expects all staff to share this commitment. The successful applicant will need to undertake an Enhanced DBS check.

Bohunt School Wokingham opened its doors to Year 7 pupils in 2016. Having grown substantially since then, we are now heavily oversubscribed, with a school roll of 1200 students aged 11-16. With the exciting announcement of our expansion to include a sixth form and additional spaces in all year groups, we will soon see more students through to 18.

Our ethos of ‘enjoy, respect, achieve’ underpins our vision to give all students an outstanding education and develop skills in the classroom and beyond. These core values help our students flourish throughout their school career, and on into later life. Reflective of the success achieved in its first three years, Ofsted recognised that the “overall educational experience for many pupils at the school is ‘life-changing’.”

Our new site has been designed and built with education at the forefront and includes specialist teaching spaces and a whole school one to one iPad provision, as well a wide range of sports and extra-curricular provision. We are leaders in outdoor education with an outdoor classroom, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and Big Expeditions to wilderness locations, alongside a variety of other trips at home and abroad.

We are part of the supportive and innovative Bohunt Education Trust, a MAT with eight schools including two Sixth Forms and a boarding facility. We may be separated geographically, however, all BET schools are student centred, sharing an uncompromising belief in high achievement and unconditional positive expectations, a real sense of community and a dynamic, innovative approach to education.

Candidates are welcome to visit the school to discuss any roles and gain a sense of our educational ethos and culture.
