Job Introduction

Repton School is seeking an outstanding Teacher of Business to start in April or September 2023. The successful candidate will be an outstanding classroom practitioner. Willingness to contribute to the wider life of a boarding school is a must.

Business is one of the largest option subjects at Repton, with about 75 pupils in each year group taking the subject for GCSE, and 35 in each year group taking AQA A-level Business. This academic year, we have also introduced the Cambridge Technical Foundation Diploma in Business, an applied general course, for a small number of Lower Sixth. This expansion has allowed us to tailor our curriculum more closely to the needs of specific pupils, and the successful candidate will play a role in delivering this qualification.

As a department, we want our pupils to enjoy and value our subject, and we are quietly proud that many Reptonians go on to read a degree related to Business, Management or Economics. We are a dedicated team of well-qualified and enthusiastic teachers; several of us also teach Economics. The department is housed in its own teaching block on Boot Hill and all the classrooms are very well equipped to facilitate choice for teachers in teaching every lesson in a creative and dynamic fashion. All teachers are provided with a touchscreen device. We have a significant bank of shared teaching resources which is regularly updated, along with a department library and subscriptions to publications like the Financial Times and The Economist.

The Business Department offers enrichment opportunities for those pupils who want extra stretch and challenge in their education, and ORs and friends of the school give insightful talks to the pupil body. As a department, we offer clinics and small-group support sessions each week, encouraging all pupils to achieve their best.

The successful candidate will be collegiate in spirit, keen to share best practice and will bring a high level of teaching practice with pupil progress at the heart of what they do. Previous experience of teaching an applied general Business course would be desirable, but we are also very happy to support early career teachers: culture fit is more important than any specific experience. This is a department that loves it’s subject, and we would expect that any prospective colleague will transmit this to our students and be keen to support all types of departmental work.

Please view the candidate information pack for a detailed description of duties and benefits.

Main Responsibilities

Repton has a tradition of academic  excellence and ambitious plans for further progress under our Deputy Head Academic, Ashley Currie. The successful application will teach Business at one of the UK’s leading co-educational boarding schools at an exciting time of rapid growth and development.

The successful candidate will work alongside supportive and enthusiastic colleagues.

The focus of this job is to deliver first-rate teaching, have an enjoyment of the subject and to facilitate excellent pupil results. In addition, the successful candidate will maintain their own professional development and subject knowledge, reflecting on their classroom and schoolwide experiences in a critical and analytical manner.

Repton works on a full boarding ethos to which all full-time staff are expected to make an enthusiastic commitment, enhancing the pupil experience not just in the classroom but through regular involvement in a range of sporting and extra-curricular activities, including duty rotas, provision and supervision of social and academic pupil events and trips and tours during holiday periods. Expertise in a particular sport or activity would be an advantage, but a willingness to learn and contribute is essential.

The ten boarding houses (four girl’s houses and six boy’s houses), into which day pupils are fully integrated, are at the heart of a superb pastoral system. Teaching staff are expected to contribute to maintaining and developing the wellbeing of the pupils primarily through the role of the tutor. The successful candidate will be attached to a boarding house and will do an evening duty one night a week and, as a tutor in that house, be responsible for the personal and academic welfare of a house year group or a group of sixth formers in concert with the Housemaster or Housemistress. The ability to be a residential tutor, working closely with the Housemaster or Housemistress and living within the boarding house community, would be an advantage. We are looking for talented staff of character, intellect and energy who will model the qualities we seek to inculcate in our pupil body.

Repton School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for 13- to 18-year-olds. Situated in Repton, Derbyshire, the school hosts around 620 pupils. Former students have included Roald Dahl and Jeremy Clarkson.

The school was founded in 1557 and has grown considerably since; it now boasts a science priory, which was built in 2013, plus multi-purpose laboratories and a 3D lecture theatre. The music school has been redeveloped and the school theatre has been redesigned to include tier seating.

Repton was previously a 12th-century priory and the remaining part of the priory is known as Prior Overton’s Tower, which has been incorporated into a 19th-century building in honour of the school's historical beginnings. For pupils who stay on campus, there are 10 houses – six for boys and four for girls.
