Job overview

Are you a fully qualified, inspirational, and highly motivated teacher, passionate about teaching chemistry and science and seeking a new opportunity at a successful and growing international school? If so, you will be interested in this exciting opportunity to join us.

About the School

Baleares International College (BIC) https://balearesint.net/campuses/sa-porassa-campus is the largest British owned school in Mallorca, providing education based on the English National Curriculum to over 460 students (from 3 to 18 years) in Sa Porrassa, a very accessible but beautiful rural area, adjacent to the south west coast of Mallorca. We are accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Education, based upon inspection and recommendation by the British Council, and are a founding member of the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS). The school is also a member of COBIS, the Council of British International Schools.

About the Opportunity

Thank you for taking the time to consider us as you plan to take the next step in your career. As a prospective colleague, we invite you to apply to join our friendly department of five scientists at Baleares International College. If you have a passion for practical science together with relentless positivity and high expectations of those you have the privilege to teach, do read on.

You are joining us at an exciting time as we have developed a KS3 science mastery curriculum, underpinned by evidence-informed retrieval practice and practical provision in order to enable the students to investigate in the laboratory after a considerable period of time spent at home during lockdown. Last year, we have introduced the International Double Award Edexcel Science (9-1) as standard for all students in order to ensure that 100% of our students study all three scientific disciplines. We also offer Separate Science as an option. Over the course of the last two years, the number of students studying science has increased from 20% studying all three sciences individually to 100% studying the three disciplines in Double Award or Separate Science. We feel strongly that it is our moral duty to make sure our students complete their KS4 studies with a good level of scientific literacy so that they can be informed about the world they live in. Our vision is that science offers something for everyone and that it can bring joy and change lives. As such, we are looking for a colleague who would be central to our endeavour as we seek to offer the best practical provision for our students. Additionally, this summer we completely renovated our science labs so you would be joining us as we benefit from a considerable investment in the teaching and learning experience for all.

Our team is looking to appoint a passionate, and highly organised science teacher (a chemistry specialist who must be able to teach up to and including KS5) to join the science department. Most importantly, we are seeking to appoint someone who will be a team-player, with a sense of humour, who is caring and will have a steadfast commitment and belief that all children can achieve. We look forward to reading your application as you consider joining us on our journey to providing an outstanding science provision for all.

The successful candidate will also want to play their part in the development and implementation of the school’s strategic plan, supporting the delivery of the school's mission to make the school the number one choice on the island.

As a British school, specialising in teaching the National Curriculum to a diverse, international student population, strong English language is an essential requirement and applications from native-level speakers of English are preferred.

About Baleares International College, Sa Porassa

The Baleares International College is located on the edge of open countryside in the beautiful area of Sa Porrassa, Calvia, in the South West of Mallorca. It was established in 1957 and is one of the oldest providers of international education on the island. It joined the Orbital Education group in 2006 and caters to a vibrant community of expatriate and local pupils from the age of 2 to 18 years of age.

The Baleares International College offers a broad based British style curriculum adapted to suit the needs of our diverse community. Its educational programme begins with the Foundation Stage curriculum for pupils aged 2-5 years and in subsequent year groups the curriculum follows the programme recommended by the British Education Department. The final years of the curriculum culminate in a series of external examinations taken between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age. These courses are devised by the prestigious Cambridge and Edexcel Examination Boards in England and result in pupils gaining IGCSE qualifications followed by AS and A-levels. These examinations enable pupils to gain entry to prestigious universities in many countries around the world.

The Baleares International College currently educates pupils from 27 countries, with many arriving with little ability to speak English, so the EAL (English as an Additional Language) programme enables them to make progress quickly. Languages play a major role in the College's educational programme; Spanish is taught from age 2, German from age 6 and French from 14 years old. Pupils are taught by fully qualified, experienced British teachers as well as a number of language teachers from Spain, Germany and France.

Pupils are provided opportunities to take part in a wide variety of sport including sailing, kayaking and windsurfing, to ensure they can take advantage of living on the island of Mallorca.

The newly acquired and fully refurbished premises of the Baleares International College has a large number of excellent facilities including indoor sports centre, playing fields with football and rugby pitches, swimming pool, all-weather basketball, football and volleyball courts, running track, brand new ICT suite, library, science laboratories, multi-media room and air conditioned classrooms with interactive whiteboards to support the pupils' learning environment.

The College prides itself on its family values in a warm, friendly atmosphere which enables pupils to develop skills and confidence for a fulfilling and responsible life in an ever-changing society.

British International Kindergarten: Following a substantial refurbishment, the College's previous site in San Agustin re-opened in September 2009 as the British International Kindergarten. It is staffed by fully trained, experienced British teachers delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum in English in a caring and stimulating environment.

In close association with The Baleares International College, The British International Kindergarten is committed to excellence and good practice and is working very closely with the school's Early Years Department.
