Job overview
The Dragon seeks to appoint a graduate to teach Classics to Years 5 to 8 who will be willing to make a wide contribution to the life of this busy, exciting and successful school. The position would suit a teacher with senior school (independent or maintained sector) experience, as well as those who have experience of teaching children of prep school age (8-13 years), whether as a newly qualified teacher (NQT), teaching for a number of years or new to teaching. Children take Common Entrance and Scholarship exams to leading senior schools at the end of Year 8.
The Dragon School was founded in 1877 to educate the sons of dons. From these modest beginnings the School has grown to be an internationally renowned independent day and boarding preparatory school for over 600 boys and girls aged 8 to 13. In September 1995 the School (which has charitable status) opened a pre-prep called Lynams on the Woodstock Road for about 200 more children aged 4 to 7.
The Dragon was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in November 2014 and was found to be “Excellent” in all areas of teaching and pastoral care and “Exceptional” with regard to “The Quality of Pupils’ Achievements and Learning”.
We have a staff compliment of over 300 full and part time individuals includes 120 teachers, 35 visiting music and learning support teachers, 30 teaching assistants, 35 pastoral staff and 90 support and administrative staff. A further range of individuals provide sports coaching and specialist services on a contract basis.

Dragon School is one of Britain’s leading preparatory schools, offering a first-class day and boarding education for girls and boys aged 4-13 years. Located in the heart of the city of Oxford, the Dragon provides a distinctive educational experience that not only celebrates childhood and the joy of learning, but also prepares young people with the skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world and continue to ‘Reach for the Sun’ (Arduus ad Solem). Academic excellence for all sits at the heart of a Dragon education. As a school, the Dragon is constantly seeking to innovate, developing the curriculum both in and out of the classroom. Dragon QUEST, the Saturday enrichment programme, is a unique opportunity to stretch pupils further, giving children the freedom to learn new and unfamiliar skills, from beekeeping to exploring anthropology; we are only limited by our imaginations. Equally, ‘giving back’ is integral to being a grounded Dragon.
