Job overview

This is a full time post on a permanent basis – however requests for part time working will also be considered

We are seeking to appoint an inspirational and enthusiastic teacher for our successful, dedicated and well-resourced English department. We are looking for a candidate who is ambitious, creative and an exceptional classroom practitioner with the ability to teach English across Key Stages Three and Four, delivering both English Language and English Literature at Key Stage Four.

The successful candidate will work with a strongly reflective team that is committed to delivering a stimulating and challenging curriculum, maximising the potential of all learners through outstanding learning and teaching.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate a track record of high-quality classroom practice, a strong team ethic, a commitment to their own continuous professional development and knowledge of the English curriculum across both key stages.

Honley High School has a strong reputation locally for academic excellence.  Students at Honley regularly make “above average” progress compared with students of similar abilities in other schools.  Honley High School is rightly recognised for its long-standing tradition of high achievement and for its friendly, inclusive, caring approach to the needs of young people. We are very proud of what we do here, proud of our record of student and staff success, and proud of the young people our students become over the time they spend with us.  We have almost 1300 students and work hard to ensure that we get to know all of them as individuals, so we are able to support them through this crucial time in their lives.

Honley is within easy reach of Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester and Huddersfield.

The successful candidate can expect:

• A supportive and friendly team of English teachers with a strong focus upon student outcomes

• A well stocked library with a dedicated, expert librarian

• A commitment to their future development through a well-structured CPD programme

• Motivated students who are eager to learn and engage in lessons

• The chance to work with teachers and leaders who are relentless in their drive to deliver the best learning experiences to their students

This is an excellent opportunity for a forward thinking and ambitious teacher to work as part of a successful team, which values high standards of academic achievement whilst developing the knowledge, skills and qualities needed to help students thrive in life and work. This post would be suitable for an experienced classroom teacher, or a confident and enthusiastic NQT, who is committed to developing best practice to offer our students the best possible learning experiences.

Honley High School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Successful applicants will need to undertake an enhanced DBS check.

If you require further information about the role, please contact Mrs Elizabeth Gaughan, Curriculum Leader for English at e.gaughan@honleyhigh.co.uk . You can also visit the school website at www.honleyhigh.co.uk

To apply for this job, please use the TES application form via the TES website. Applicants must include a covering letter (2 sides of A4 maximum, font size 11 minimum) incorporating details of qualities, skills and past experience in direct relation to the role requirements.

Closing Date is 12 noon Friday 14 May 2021.

Interviews are expected to take place on Tuesday 25 May 2021.

Vision and Values

Central to everything we are working to achieve is the school vision. We are striving to create an exceptional school where all members of the school community:

  • Are proud of the school, respectful of each other, socially responsible, and believe in and promote our values
  • Work within an atmosphere of mutual support, respect and collaboration
  • Are committed to individual and collective success and place no ceiling on aspiration
  • Celebrate effort as well as achievement, take risks and learn from mistakes, recognising the intrinsic value of learning
  • Place the needs of the child at the centre of learning, nurture their creativity in overcoming the challenges of today and develop their resilience to address the uncertainties of tomorrow

The exceptional school that we will create will be founded upon the following beliefs:

  • We believe in fairness, equity and inclusion: we value every child for who they are and show compassion and understanding in our dealings with one another
  • We strive for excellence in everything we do: we have high aspirations for everyone and believe that children and adults thrive in a climate of praise, celebration and recognition. We always measure ourselves against the highest standards
  • We believe in working together to protect the interests and well-being of all members of our community

We value working in partnership with others and in September 2019 we joined with four other schools in Kirklees and Calderdale to form the Together Learning Trust. This multi-academy trust, which replaces our previous Co-operative Trust status, has been founded on the principles of Integrity, Creativity and Excellence. Our expectation is that by working together as a family of schools we will be able to provide even greater opportunities for our learners and greater access to professional development for our staff.  We are pleased that many of our previous Co-operative Trust partners agreed to transfer across to support this new venture and are continuing to work with us to develop our children into well-rounded and socially responsible young adults.

Ofsted report

“The systems to check the performance of teachers are thorough and clearly identify the skills that teachers need to strengthen. The school’s substantial programme for teachers’ professional development has assisted well in ensuring teaching is good. Support and training for subject leaders have helped them to contribute strongly to improving teaching and pupils’ outcomes.”
