Job overview

Dollar Academy is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic teacher of Geography for a full time permanent post beginning in August 2021. The successful applicant will have a passion for sustainability and the world about them and will be expected to stimulate similar interest in, and enjoyment of, geographical studies in their pupils.

Dollar Academy is set in a beautiful central location, about 40 minutes north of Edinburgh. The Geography Department consists of three classrooms and a fieldwork lab housed in the main building of the school. The department is well resourced with digital whiteboards, numerous IT accessories and extensive fieldwork equipment. The present teaching team consists of three teachers who all actively contribute to departmental policy and resources and form a small collaborative team.

The department is seeking to appoint a qualified teacher who would be able to teach Geography from S1 to Advanced Higher level in collaboration with others. Some knowledge of Environmental Science would be desirable. The ability to teach a second subject would be of interest but is not essential.

In session 2020-21 there are two Higher Geography classes, one Higher Environmental Science class, one Advanced Higher Geography class and three National 5 Geography classes in S4. Within this group of pupils, teachers are expected to promote an ethos of achievement and success, meeting the needs of all pupils. This will be underpinned with exemplary teaching skills and excellent subject knowledge. The department runs curricular trips to Aberfeldy and the Yorkshire Dales and has organised overseas trips to SW USA, Morocco, Japan and the Alps. Sustainability and outdoor education have a high profile in the school and the department organises tree planting and litter picking activities, working with the local community. The successful candidate would be expected to take a significant role in the organisation and running of these trips and activities.

The academic standard throughout the school is high. We believe that we have retained what is best from traditional approaches, while incorporating the most effective modern strategies and resources.

The Academy has a rich co-curricular programme in which all members of staff are expected to participate. The ability to coach a team in one of the school’s major sports, or offer an activity, would be particularly useful.

The salary for the post will be in accordance with the SNCT main grade scales with the Dollar enhancement of 10% in addition. It should be noted that the Chartered Teachers pay scale does not apply to teachers employed by the Academy.

Candidates should either be registered with the GTC Scotland, or eligible for registration.

All appointments are subject to receipt of a satisfactory PVG Scheme Record or Scheme Record Update from Disclosure Scotland.

About Dollar Academy

Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 as the UK’s first co-educational day and boarding school and has been at the heart of Scotland’s educational development for 200 years. The school is the Sunday Times Scottish Independent School of the Year 2018.

Dollar has over 1250 pupils aged 5-18, of whom approximately 75 are boarders. The school’s extensive 70 acre campus is set in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Central Scotland and is within easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is conveniently situated and can be reached in 45 minutes.

Dollar is distinguished by its excellence in pastoral care, co-curricular provision and classroom teaching.

Enjoyment of learning lies at the heart of this school and the aim is for all pupils to gain satisfaction from a real commitment to study and participation in the great range of sporting, art and cultural activities on offer.

Dollar pupils undertake internationally recognised SQA examination courses and, in a typical year, over 65% of exam results are at Grade A. Although firmly grounded in the values of Scottish education, Dollar takes a deliberately international approach and the diverse boarding community is at the heart of school life.
