Job overview

Ewell Castle is a thriving, independent school located in Ewell Village, one mile outside Epsom, in leafy Surrey. The school is co-educational from Nursery to Sixth Form and enjoys small classes, averaging approximately fifteen over the whole School. Ewell Castle has an excellent reputation for its pastoral care of pupils and enjoys a vibrant community spirit including regular events for staff, parents and friends of the School.

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and suitably experienced individual to undertake the role of  Teacher of Philosophy and Religious Studies. You will be an inspiring and engaging teacher with a positive outlook.  We will expect you to teach across the full age and ability range in the Senior School.

In Years 7-9, pupils explore a range of topics across six major world religions and take part in Philosophy for Children enquiries. At GCSE we follow the AQA specification which explores two world religions and four ethical themes, covering a wide range of social and moral issues. Those not opting for a GCSE in this subject currently follow a ‘Philosophy, Religion and Ethics’ course in Year 11 where they will have a chance to cover some of the same areas. However next year all pupils in year 10 will begin a two-year GCSE short course, in order to achieve half a GCSE, which will be in addition to the co-teachable full course GCSE, if they choose this as an option. A Level studies in the Sixth Form use the AQA syllabus focusing on Christianity, Philosophy and Ethics. This includes an in-depth study of Christian sources of wisdom, views of God, and self along with the examination of a huge range of the world’s greatest thinkers, from Plato and Aristotle to Dawkins and Darwin and much else in between.

Class sizes range from approximately 15 - 20 in size at KS3 and KS4, with smaller groups at A level. Pupils are taught in mixed abilities groups.

Please note that we reserve the right to appoint before the closing date.
