Features diary writing, creative horror writing, newspaper writing and instruction writing with reading tasks and SPAG starters. Resources for most lessons including worksheets, planning sheets and differentiated checklists for big writes.

24 lessons with resources used to teach very low ability SEN group and re-engage them with writing around Halloween time. My class were mainly KS3 but could be used for KS2 and potentially KS4 depending on your students’ abilities. I’ve created worksheets and resources for most lessons. Scheme may require tweaking in places to suit your needs but can probably be taught as it is for the most part.

1 lesson on the Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear. Contains reading and writing tasks with a writing extension task. Planned and delivered to small groups of KS3 SEN students in a behaviour setting. Would also work well for KS2.

11 lesson scheme planned and delivered to small groups in an SEN setting, introducing some ancient Eygptian myths before outlining the hero’s cycle. The students learn about each section of the structure, plan and draft their writing for each section and then complete an independent big write. Although the scheme is 11 lessons, I personally taught this over more lessons using reading lessons and developmental marking lessons to improve students’ work. 13 lessons planned and taught to small groups of SEN students in a behaviour school setting around the theme of coasts. Scheme begins on pirates and focusses on letter writing and shanties/poems, moves onto writing a desert island journal and ends with surfing, looking at adverts and instructions. Scheme contains resources for most lessons and took me more than 13 lessons to cover effectively with my groups.

3 lessons on descriptive writing skills. Planned and delivered to small groups of SEN students in a behaviour setting for their transition from KS2 to KS3. Lessons on thesaurus work and synonyms, zooming in on details and showing not telling. Leads to a big write about a peregrine falcon attack. Resources included (will need to create ‘zooming lenses’ for second lesson)

8 lesson scheme around space theme and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator planned and delivered to small groups of SEN students in a behaviour setting. Scheme includes paragraphing, direct speech, guided reading lessons, PEE paragraphs and extended writing focussing on show not tell with SPAG starters. Students will need access to chapters 1 and 3 of the above text.
