16 Ideas for learning a new word.
The problem that this idea overcomes.
When a student learns the meaning of a new word, how, in practice, does this work? The meaning is explained and the context of the word in the text may be mentioned. But the problem is that the knowledge concerning the word exists in a sort of abstract vacuum. For a word to be mastered it must be used. It must also be used more than once and ideally in a variety of situations. If you can add to that an element of experimentation and creative thinking then the word will be more likely remembered and become part of the student’s ‘usable vocabulary’. These ideas are designed to achieve just that. In practical terms you would naturally not be able to spend so much time on every new word but to selectively use these ideas would enrich the learning experience.
The ideas for the new word to be learned are:

  1. Relate it to seasons.
  2. Use it with objects.
  3. Try animals.
  4. Character conversation.
  5. Rhyming couplet.
  6. Acrostic – concerning ships
  7. Shouted command.
  8. Expand a sentence.
  9. Predicament.
  10. Split word.
  11. Connecting clause or phrase.
  12. Time.
  13. Sounds.
  14. Food.
  15. Map.
  16. Argument.
