Age 10/11 Name 3D Shapes Lesson

The lesson’s focus is to name 3D shapes, but we also consolidate naming 2D shapes and move on to describing 3D shapes. Pictures and suggested actions are provided for different types of learner. Investigation activities include colouring vertices and marking edges for the LA or looking at Euler’s formula for the HA.

The lesson is aimed at children at an age 10/11 level (Year 6 in England and Wales).

The lesson’s context revolves around a mission to Mars where we are marooned and have to struggle for survival. Pre-lesson preparation is provided with three animations from an astronaut’s first-person point of view as he or she travels and lands on Mars, making the lesson come alive for the children (see the animations here). Three further animations set the context of being marooned on Mars, repairing a satellite to communicate with home and then finding strange 3D objects (see the animations here). PowerPoints provide structure, modelling, examples and explanation. Optional IT links are provided for ability groups.

There is a lesson plan which include:

• suggested links to the Welsh, English, Northern Irish, Republic of Ireland and Australian curriculums;
• notes to provide lesson information and context;
• optional pre-lesson preparation;
• starter, main, groups and plenary sections with suggested timings (please change depending on your class);
• sections of the lesson linked to Blooms taxonomy (see for more info.);
• talk time suggestions;
• PowerPoint presentations to support teaching;
• differentiated group activities with extra ideas for early finishers;
• consideration of, and reference to, different learning styles; and
• independent activities that are planned to aim to allow the teacher to support or extend an assessment group within the lesson

We aim to provide detailed and thorough planning, so there will be more information, examples and differentiation in the planning than are needed, and changes may need to be made depending on your class.
