This presentation provides two days of teaching that cover the objectives:

  • Revise finding unit fractions of quantities using division facts.
  • Revise finding non-unit fractions of quantities using division and multiplication.

It includes starter activities, whole class teaching, group activities, practice sheets and mastery questions. It can be used on a variety of interactive whiteboards.

Day 1 Teaching
Children find different unit fractions of 12 and 16 cubes, making links to division facts.

Day 2 Teaching
Show a bar model representing fifths of 25. How much is 1/5? Use this to find 2/5, 3/5, and 4/5 of 25.
Repeat for sixths of 24. Then find 5/6, discussing how one way is to count on 4, 8, 12, etc. but that is quicker to multiply 4 by 5. Repeat for eighths of 24. Then try 3/4 of 20 and 2/3 of 15 without a bar model.

This teaching is part of Hamilton’s Year 3 Fractions block. Each Hamilton maths block contains a complete set of planning and resources to teach a term’s worth of objectives for one of the National Curriculum for England’s maths areas.
