Franz Marc in quotes - the German artist on his animal paintings, his life in Blaue Reiter and World War 1. - free resource for students, pupils, art-lovers and teachers in German art history

.
Franz Marc’s quotes describe his desire as a German painter artist for vivid and expressive colors in his well-known animal paintings. Marc was searching for an expressive, new and modern art. Together with Kandinsky he started the famous artist-group ‘Blaue Reiter / Blue Rider’ in Munich, South Germany.

Franz Marc rejected firmly Cubism and abstract art, because of the lost of the connection with the subject, because of the abstraction. On the contrary, Marc wanted to catch the identity of his ‘horse, deer or fox’ as living and recognizable beings in his painting art! His style became later in his artistic life more abstract, combined with dynamic Futurist compositions. He died young in the battle-fields of World War 1. in 1915, fighting for Germany.

Some selected quotes of German artist Franz Marc - as a short introduction of his extended quotes in the PDF:

  • ’You know my tendency is always to imagine things in my head and to work from this idea… …Blue is the male principle, astringent and spiritual. Yellow is the female principle, gentle, gay and spiritual. Red is matter, brutal and heavy…’ - quote of Franz Marc, from his letter to August Macke, Dec. 1910

  • ’Dear August… .I want to start like a child, to express my impression in front of nature with three colors and a few lines, and then add to forms and colors, where it requires the expression… …and never (causes) a removal. Only we painters know how stupidly difficult this is.’ - quote from Marc’s letter to his German artist-friend Macke, 1911

  • ’There is something impressive and mystical about the artillery battles… .I still do not think differently about the war… .It simply seems to me feeble and lifeless to consider it vulgar and dumb. I dream of a new Europe… …I see in this war the healing… …it will purify Europe.’ - quote in Marc’s letter from the war front to his wife, Sept, 1914
