Two comprehensive and enjoyable lessons explaining friction and air resistance for middle school science students studying forces. Each fully resourced topic comes with an engaging animated PowerPoint and a collection of thirteen worksheets, guided notes, activities and homework. All answers are provided. For each lesson a one – page flow chart lesson plan shows where logical choices can be made between resources if time requires. The PowerPoints also support students through planning and designing results tables for three labs to investigate:
- the relationship between the force needed to move a shoe over different types of surface.
- the relationship between surface area of a parachute and air resistance
- do streamlined objects travel faster in water?
A set of results is provided for each lab so that students can draw a conclusion should apparatus not be available.
The dominoes game has questions and statements instead of numbers and is a really useful way to consolidate learning after the lessons have been taught or to use as test prep. So much fun, students don’t even realise they are learning!
What’s Covered
- Friction is a force which opposes motion and is measured in newtons (N).
- Friction increases with the roughness of the surface.
- Friction is caused by collisions between “bumps” (sometimes microscopic) as surfaces slide over each other.
- Collisions slow things down and produce heat.
- How lubricants reduce friction
- Air resistance results from collisions between the front of an object and air particles.
- Air resistance wastes energy and slows moving objects
- The relationship between acceleration due to gravity, sir resistance, steady speed and why parachutes work.
- Streamlined bodies reduce air resistance to travel faster;
