Futurism described and explained in quotes of the Futurist artists + selected art-images - free resource for students, pupils, art-lovers and teachers in Italian art history

.
Futurism, described and explained - the Italian futurist artists expressed in their quotes the desire to catch in art the new dynamic phenomena in the big modern cities of Italy, c. 1905-1910. They searched for new ways to express daily life phenomena as movements and sounds of the urban traffic by cars, trams, cyclists and people in the streets of the big cities in Italy, like Rome.

The Futurists realized very well that the new dynamic phenomena of the modern city penetrated rather suddenly the human body and mind, in the changing modern times. The artists loved and honored speed, rumor, busy streets full of people and traffic - in all their movements and sounds! By expressing these sensations in dynamic images the Futurist artist wanted to force the spectator to play an ‘active’ role by observing and experiencing the Futurist art-works.

Selected artist-quotes on Italian Futurism - as a short introduction of the extended quotes in the PDF:

  • ’We Futurists are trying… …to place ourselves at the very center of things… …We thus give plastic planes a plastic expansion in space, obtaining this feeling of something in perpetual motion which is peculiar to everything living.’ - quote of Carlo Carrà: in ‘Piani plastici come espanzione sferica nello spazio Carrà’, March 1913

  • ’And we (the Futurist artists) must invent dynamic designs to go with them and express them in equally dynamic shapes: triangles, cones, spirals, ellipses, circles, etc.’ - quote of Giacomo Balla, in his unpublished Futurist ‘Manifesto of Men’s clothing’’, 1914
