This lesson gives pupils basic contextual information about life in 1912 and 1945, to support their understanding and analysis of An Inspector Calls. It is suitable for lower to middle ability GCSE English Literature pupils.

The main activity is a treasure hunt about life in 1912. Cut up the fact cards and pin them around your classroom. Pupils have to answer the questions on the quiz sheet by 'finding' the facts. The word search can be used if any pupils finish, or to occupy some pupils if your room is small.

The lesson then goes on to cover 1945 and prompts pupils to consider why these dates are important in relation to the play.
