A popular unit of work at KS3 / KS4. These questions could also be considered

  • Why did women need the vote?
  • Did the Suffragettes help or hinder the campaign to win the vote for women?
  • What was the role and status of women in Nineteenth Century Britain?
  • Was the struggle to improve the role and status of women all about changing attitudes?
  • Was it the First World War rather than the Suffragettes that gained the vote for women?
  • How much did the role and status of women improve after the right to vote was achieved?

There are many opportunities to develop the concepts of different types and rates of change, causation, empathy, propaganda, pressure groups, similarity and difference, turning points / tipping points, the use of force in a democracy and different interpretations of the Suffragettes. There is an emphasis on handling sources and related assessment opportunities, especially and investigation into the 1913 Suffragette Derby. In terms of relevancy to today, the theme of how far attitudes still need to change can be developed.

The main structure is provided by two Power Point presentation,s (containing several YouTube clips, supplemented by several information sheets. Card sort. There are several opportunities for group work.

The scheme of work is intended as a general framework.
