Iterative Furniture Design Project

In this outstanding, creative scheme of work, students are tasked with designing and making a storage unit for Ikea reflecting the style of a particular 20th century design movement. With practical, written and theory work closely related to the new 1-9 GCSE Design Technology Specification. The scheme is a full term (12 or 6 week) project though could be condensed or even further extended.

It covers the entire iterative (non-linear) design process as well as relatable theory. The SOW can be adapted to be taught at KS3 or KS4.

Lessons include in order:
Introuction to Design Movements (work of others theory)
Creating a mood/style board
Product Analysis (iterative design theory)
Writing a brief
Writing a specfication for a particular client
Ideation (SCAMPER)
Design Development
Initial Sketching
Advanced Sketching techniques (2-point, free-hand isometric)
Iterative Design (design, prototype, evaluate)
Soft modelling
Wood Theory
Final making
Evaluation (CAFEQUE)
