This is a practical Maths activity where learners investigate how they could make improvements to a car park. It is designed to give students an appreciation of how the maths topics they have covered fit together to have practical applications in the real world.

You wheel need a Trundle wheel and a suitable outdoor space (preferably an existing car park, although you could alter the sheet slightly to imply you are building the car park from scratch).

As part of the investigation students will

  • take measurements of the car par and an individual bay
  • work out how many bays they can fit in their car park
  • use the internet to source materials
  • consider the labour costs
  • give a quote for the work
  • calculate projected percentage profit

WARNING: Please be aware of the risks involved with taking measurements in a car park and take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of your students.
