This lesson is designed for KS2 children. It can be taught as a stand alone lesson but is also available as part a unit called Volcanoes which is available on TES.
First the presentation locates Montserrat in the world and more specifically the Caribbean. It then looks at the eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano from 1995-99 and the devastating impact on the island.
There are two activities which accompany this lesson, plus extension activities:
Video quiz activity which could be done in pairs/groups.
Children write a volcano fact file about Soufriere Hills. This is differentiated 3 ways:
LA - Children have statements to stick or copy into their fact file.
MA - Children have a sequenced facts and vocabulary prompt to scaffold their writing.
UA - Children have normal facts and vocabulary prompt to support their writing.
There is also a cloze procedure extension activity which is differentiated two ways, for lower and upper KS2.
