  • READY TO TEACH (LESSON 7/8 - DESERTS).

This lesson requires the use of the blue AQA Oxford textbook.

As a starter activity, pupils self-assess their homework answers (slides 1-3). Show pupils the image of slide 4. What do they see? An expansion of the desert? Or a method in which to prevent desertification? Show pupils the clip (The Great Green Wall). Outline the section of the syllabus taught during today’s lesson (slide 6). Recap with pupils the physical causes of desertification. Pupils refer to information in the figure to answer the question discussing the effects of desertification on people and the environment. Pupils are required to draw a sketch showing salinisation. Pupils link each method of managing desertification to its description. An extension task is on slide 11 for pupils who complete the task before the allotted time. Recap answers, pupils self-assess before gluing in their answers. An important homework task set. Pupils are required to create revision cards on three successful ways in which countries have managed to reduce the spread of desertification. These case studies (Jordan, India and Burkina Faso) must be learnt in detail, show an example (slide 14). Pupils must also revise for their forthcoming examination. A fun quiz included as a plenary to see how attentive pupils have been during the lesson/ module!
