With thought provoking facts and figures to stimulate discussion this 30-minute lesson is linked to the KS3 and KS4 computing, computer science and design & technology curriculum and looks at three key areas:

  • Mobile phone history
Starting from the invention of telephones in 1985 by Alexander Graham Bell, the lesson traces the history of the development of mobile phones to the current time.
  • How mobile phones work
The lesson covers ARM microprocessors, phone design and smartphones.
Network generations from 1G to 5G are briefly explained.
  • Staying safe on your mobile phone

Many of these developments are illustrated by life stories taken from the Archives of IT website. Accompanying teachers’ notes are also available.
