
This medium difficulty Tarsia puzzle uses pv and powers of 10.
Put the pieces together so that sides that are lined up are equal to each other OR one side is a statement and the other side is the answer to the statement. When completed, the puzzle should be a 4 by 4 square where all adjoining sides match in value.
To solve this puzzle, students should be able to:
- Recognise that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents one place to its left.
- Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10.
- They should also be able to use whole number exponents to denote powers of 10.
- Be aware of mathematical vocabulary.
