PRIMARY FRENCH NUMBERS 0-10: TEN DIFFERENTIATED WORD SEARCHES ideal for Elementary French and beginner French classes of all ages and year groups.

I’ve found that word searches are the ideal activity for young and beginning students of French to engage with the written French word, at the same time developing essential beginner French vocabulary. They are easily differentiated - and the grids have an increasing level of challenge, to ensure that all students can feel confident about their learning - and lots of chances to keep challenging themselves. I’ve indicated the direction the words are located in the grid with arrows.

There are 5 French to French grids, with an additional number vocab list to complete for extra spelling practice. I always create English to French grids too - that’s a great way of consolidating vocab, and there’s a vocab list to complete too. For me, answer keys are absolutely essential. Not only do they give students more independence (they love to mark their own and each other’s work!) but they give them further chance to engage with the language. For my younger and beginner students, I do tend to put the word searches in landscape format - this really helps them to look carefully at words, both in French and English.

The word searches are really versatile, and I use them in lots of different contexts, such as starter and refresher activities, fun-time fillers, sub lessons, or free-choice activity at any time during the school year.
