Rembrandt in his quotes; the Dutch artist on painting art - moreover quotes on Rembrandt by contemporaries in The Netherlands - - free resource for pupils, students and teachers in art history

.
There don’t exist many artist-quotes of Rembrandt himself: only c 12 quotes - which you find here in the PDF (transl. Anne Porcelijn). Happily we do have a lot of quotes by his Dutch contemporeries about Rembrandt - as a painter and teacher in art - like his former pupils, colleague-painters, citizens of Amsterdam, family, etc. You will find a selction of them here in this PDF too!

Unlike most Dutch masters of the 17th century in The Netherlands, Rembrandt’s works depict a wide range of style and subject matter. From portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, genre scenes, allegorical and historical scenes, biblical and mythological themes - in his paintings, drawings and etchings. The characteristic light and dark of Rembrandt became most important in his late art.
.

  • ’in these two paintings (his ‘Entombment of Christ’ and the arising Christ) the greatest and most natural movement has been expressed (and rendered), which is also the main reason why they have taken so long to execute.’. - Rembrandt’s quote, in his letter to Constantijn Huygens, Febr. 1636

  • ’Try to put well in practice what you already know; and in so doing, you will in good time, discover the hidden things which you now inquire about.
