Robert Burns/ St Andrews Assembly script (Translating pop songs into Scots)

This is a set of creative resources that look at Robert Burns, as well as bringing Scots language to life, by using Scots dictionaries (online and paperback) to translate modern pop songs into Scots.

Children then used my examples to select their own pop songs to translate into Scots. We then used their translated songs to write a really engaging script for our St. Andrew’s Day Assembly performance (parents and children still talk about it!)

I have also included a really successful sequence of learning, based on understanding the traditional But and Ben- style of housing, like the birthplace of Robert Burns. This culminated in a writing task (in the style of “Through the Keyhole”) to describe Robert Burns’ birthplace.

Finally, there is a Burns Bonanza quiz that I used at the end of our mini-topic; with the children then using all the information they had learned about Robert Burns, to create their own quiz.
