A 25 page booklet containing grammatical terms and rhetorical devices. The terms are translated into German and there are examples given for each one.
Newly arrived students who attended school in another country and used to have another language of education but English may initially struggle to access the curriculum in English in an ability set that matches their overall cognitive ability. Since tasks in English often require knowledge about the language and a terminology which may have been used slightly differently when referring to their previous education, they are often not able to draw on knowledge acquired in their previous education. This resource seeks to bridge this gap by giving examples and EAL-friendly hints.
Students who have previously studied through the medium of German will find the translations and hints helpful as they will enable them to look up terms in German and develop their understanding of English grammar and major differences between English and German.
The rest of the class may benefit from the English version and have the same examples without the translations.
This is suitable for:
• The whole class
• EAL students (new to English, early stage, advanced stage)
• Late arrivals in KS4
• Individual students who need to catch up
