The Hobbit (J. R. R. Tolkien) - Chapter 1 - NO PREP ACTIVITIES, ANSWERS + GUIDE

This is a set of print-and-use worksheets, activities, handouts and presentation-mode PDFs for J. R. R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy children’s novel The Hobbit, and more specifically for Chapter 1 - An Unexpected Party.

This comprehensive teaching unit includes the following:

  1. Comprehension Questions for Chapter 1 - An Unexpected Party

  2. Close Reading Questions for Chapter 1 (a set of more advanced questions that require close reading and inference).

  3. Quotes / Important Passages from Chapter 1 of the novel, accompanied by guiding questions.

  4. Thror’s Map - Taking a Closer Look Activity (An easier activity that focuses on Thror’s map, often overlooked in Chapter 1 of The Hobbit.

  5. Making Connections Activity: This activity facilitates a closer look at concepts of prejudice, bias, and race in fantasy novels, using Chapter 1 (and the various races - hobbits, dwarves, elves, wizards, and humans introduced) as a basis for pair work and a more critical, in-depth discussion of these crucial concepts. This activity can also be returned to later in your teaching of* The Hobbit*.

  6. Storyboard Activity: This is an alternative, creative way to test students’ comprehension of the main events of Chapter 1 (can be done in addition to or alternatively to the comprehension questions, and caters more to visual learners.)

  7. TEACHER’S GUIDE + PRESENTATION (a set of slides for use in class or in a video conference) is included. Perfect for DISTANCE LEARNING, this includes

  8. MODEL ANSWERS for the comprehension & close reading questions as well as slides for teaching the activities on the worksheets and the entire lesson. NO PREP NEEDED!

  9. I’ve also included a DETAILED SUMMARY & ANALYSIS of Chapter 1 as further guidance for teachers, especially useful for those teaching The Hobbit for the first time, or in a homeschooling, DISTANCE LEARNING setting. I’ve also included sample storyboards for the storyboarding activity.

NB: I’ve included a range of different (and differentiated) activities so that you can choose what best suits your class of students, and depending on how much in-depth analysis you would like to go into for each chapter. I usually read The Hobbit with Grade 7 students, but this unit of work can naturally be used with Grade 6 or Grade 8 students as well!

Enjoy, and please leave feedback!
