The workhouses of Victorian Britain are synonymous with Charles Dickens, poverty and the slums. The workhouses haunted cities like ghostly spectres. They loomed threateningly in people’s consciousness as the working class fought hard to make ends meet. Families tried all sorts of ways to pay the bills before succumbing to the indignity and horror of the Victorian workhouse.

This is a social history resource which uses genuine historical data to detail daily life in a Victorian workhouse. My resource on Victorian Investigative Journalism and Charles Dickens complements this one by including first hand accounts of conditions in a Victorian Workhouse.

This is ideal for English KS3/KS4 students as it provides crucial context for the 19th century novel.

It is presented in size 18 font with 4 clear pictures and no extra clutter making it perfect for vision impaired students, those who wear glasses or have ASD/ADHD/dyslexia.

When you set research for homework, print this out or upload to your sharing platform to make it easier for all your students including SEN students to access good quality historical writing.

This is an editable word document so it is easy to make the font smaller or bigger if you so wish.
