This is an outstanding resource created from the Edexcel International GCSE 2009 in Science (Double Award) (4SC0) and Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 Certificate in Science (KSC0).

This resource draws in visual presentation slides whilst maintaining its informational content. An observation of the lesson from the University of Hertfordshire deemed this lesson as outstanding.

The hook/starter draws upon the pupils inquisitiveness to learn by showing them an image of wet cloths hanging on a washing line. Pupils are asked to discuss under what conditions would these clothes dry quicker than normal. The level descriptors/outcomes will then be discussed with the class which they can refer back to through out the period of the lesson to monitor their own progress.

This lesson is hands on immediately as pupils should be able to prepare a stick of celery (with leaves) and rest this in a beak of blue dye. This can be placed at the side of the lab to return to later. Secondly, the pupils will then prepare a section of plant which includes a root system as well as leaves (spider plant) and place this in a boiling tube. The roots will be covered with water and then a small layer of oil should be placed on top of this. Therefore the only pathway for the water is through the plant. These plants will be placed in 4 conditions: in direct sunlight, the shade, under a heat lamp, and in front of a fan.

Pupils are then handed the attached worksheet which has been adapted from an a-level resource. The presentation and the handout go hand in hand. The sections of the worksheet are number 1 to 12. These sections tell the story of transpiration through many different mini-activities, mini-plenary's, practice exam questions, practicals and demonstrations. The sections focus on the root system including root hair cells, the function and structure of the xylem, the structure and function of the leaves, concluding with the factors that effect transpiration.

The lesson is concluded by collecting in the data from the plants in the 4 different conditions. Plants should have bee weighed on a balance before, and the after the period of time. A noticeable difference in mass should be detectable between different conditions.
