This is a detailed scheme of work (and fully resourced first lesson) aimed at preparing students for both their unseen poetry question (AQA Literature 2, Section c). However, the scheme of work also uses some poems from the Love and Relationships cluster (as we teach Power and Conflict for the GCSE).
The theme of the unit is love and relationships, and the poems are broken down into groups - covering familial relationships, romantic relationships and lost or broken relationships.
It is aimed at year 9, although would be appropriate for year 10. There is a range of tier 2 and tier 3 vocabulary embedded into the unit, and the first lesson looks at 10 words that students can use to describe the effect of a method (e.g. poignant, jarring, striking). These words are taught in advance, and then referred back to throughout the unit.
I have found in teaching this SOW that it has had a positive impact on the quality of academic writing, with students becoming increasingly confident in analysing the effects of methods with sophisticated vocabulary (e.g. being able to explain how language is chosen to evoke a sense of nostalgia).
Every lesson has an LO, a key poem, a key theme, links to AQA GCSE specification criteria, suggested activities, and - where relevant - links to key T2 and T3 vocabulary.
There is also an assessment cycle and vocabulary list on the front page, as well as an outline of the aims of the unit and important notes for teachers.

Aims of unit:

  • Provide opportunities to analyse unseen poetry
  • Develop analysis of language and structure
  • Build Tier 2 vocabulary selected to improve the quality of analysis across all units
  • Imitate and develop individual poetic styles
  • Prepare students for Unseen Poetry analysis (Lit Paper 2, Section C)
  • Prepare students for Power and Conflict Poetry unit, through looking at poetry in a thematic way.
