Vincent van Gogh in quotes - the Dutch artist wrote in his many letters on his painting and artistic life in The Netherlands and in France - free art-resource for students, pupils and teachers in art history

Van Gogh’s quotes are taken from his many letters he wrote to his brother Theo and to other artists. Vincent informed Theo almost weekly about his daily life, his daily painting activities and about other painter-artists, he admired or met. So he wrote among others about painting and preparing his famous painting ‘Potato Eaters’ and his religious feelings which changed radically during the years.

All panting and drawing of Vincent just happened in a short period of 10 years! Unbelievable! Vincent van Gogh was very consciousness in his method of painting - he planned a lot beforehand like his choice of colors - in contrary to the ‘disturbed Vincent’, so often pictured in books and films.

Some selected artist-quotes of Vincent van Gogh - as a short introduction of his extended quotes in the PDF:

  • ’When I am writing (for his study theology) I instinctively make a little drawing now and then like the one I sent you lately, and for instance, this morning, ‘Elijah in the Desert.’ - quote of Vincent van Gogh, 1877: in his letter to brother Theo, from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June, 1877

  • ’Here (in Arles), under a stronger sun, I have found true what Pissarro said, and what Gauguin wrote to me as well, the simplicity, the lack of color, the gravity of great sunlight effects.’ - quote of Van Gogh, in his letter to brother Theo from Arles, France, Oct. 1888

  • ’At present I have (painted) a portrait of a woman (Madame Roulin)… .Which I’ve called ‘La Berceuse’, . .It’s a woman dressed in green (bust olive green and the skirt pale Veronese green). Her hair is entirely orange and in plaits. The complexion worked up in chrome yellow, with a few broken tones, of course, in order to model… .Whether I’ve actually sung a lullaby with colour I leave to the critics.’ - quote from Vincent’s letter from Arles, France, Jan. 1889 - to his Dutch artist-friend Arnold Koning
