WISE My Skills My Life Careers resource Role Models

Introduction and Summary

My Skills My Life is a resource to be used by young people to discover careers suited to their personality types.
The activity comprises an on line activity that can be found here: www.myskillsmylife.org.uk.

The students can complete the quiz online or by using the paper resource (attached). Once they have completed this, it shows them all the real life role models that have the same personality as them and the career they have in STEM (Science, Technology & Engineering).

It shows career pathways that the role models have taken. It’s an opportunity to find out about lots of different careers before making a decision about your future.

Learning Objectives

To discover what your own preferred way of working is, and then explore job profiles of women who match your strengths. As people who work in roles that suit them are happier and more successful.

Learning Outcomes

All - Complete the quiz to find out what their preferred way of working is

Most – Understand how knowing their own preferred way of working will help them find job roles that suit their strengths

Some – Will explore the other preferred ways of working, and the corresponding job profiles

Equality, diversity & inclusion strategies

The level of English used will be accessible to students working at National Curriculum Level 3 and upwards.
Only exceptions are for the words such as diplomatic, and intuitive but when these words are hovered over in the quiz definitions appear for the students to read.
This session does not need to be delivered in one go, the starter activity can be completed beforehand e.g. as a homework, during tutor time etc.

Try to use as diverse a range of role models as possible e.g. different ages, ethnicities, pathways to their career (for example University or Apprenticeships), career changers etc.

Role models can be requested via WISE or through the STEM Ambassador network (run by STEM Learning). Or through your own contacts. Ensure all role models are enhanced DBS checked.

To get the most out of this session students require good communication skills. However, most students will only need to ask questions when in small groups, with just one student per group volunteering to feedback what they have learnt to the class during the plenary. Session is accessible to students working at English National Curriculum Level of 4, recommended Level 5 upwards.
