This 5 session guided reading unit is all about a balanced argument. The included text is based on reasons for and against school uniform.

Great to study across a week or half term, these sessions are based around reading the text together as a whole class (or group) and predicting, clarifying vocabulary and exploring the text.

Children will build up a knowledge of the features and language used in a balanced argument text.

Learning objectives:

  1. To identify and explain the features and structure of a balanced argument and to express their own opinion on the topic.
  2. To compare and contrast different points of view on school uniforms and to use conjunctions to link ideas.
  3. To analyse the language and techniques used to present the negative aspects of school uniforms and to evaluate the strength of the arguments.
  4. To evaluate the validity and reliability of the statements in a balanced argument and to justify their own opinion on the topic.
  5. To summarise the main points of a balanced argument and to write a conclusion that states the writer’s opinion and the reasons for it.
