Harry Potter characters and their links to classical (Roman & Greek) mythology

Harry Potter characters and their links to classical (Roman & Greek) mythology

Did you know that most of the names of characters and magical creatures in the Harry Potter series have roots in classical mythology and Latin and/or Ancient Greek? Do your students love Harry Potter? This is a ready to use, editable Powerpoint presentation with slides of 24 different characters and creatures from the Harry Potter series, where possible with images from the movie. In the notes for each slide you will find the description of that slide: the connection between that specific Harry Potter character and Latin or Ancient Greek language and/or mythology. Let the students recognise the characters and teach them about the links with the classics, to let them discover once again that the classics really are all around us, if only we learn to see them!

Discover your Roman name

Discover your Roman name

This fun activity includes instructions for students to discover what their Roman name would be, according to the three-part Roman naming system. It teaches them about the Roman nomenclature system and, in a step-by-step instruction, it creatively encourages them to think about their own Romanised name. It can be printed as a poster or as a handout activity.

Activity Pack to go 'worksheet-less' for a Classics trip to the British Museum

Activity Pack to go 'worksheet-less' for a Classics trip to the British Museum

I use this for our Year 9 trip to the British Museum. It is inspired by Richard Woff who gave us some great INSET on 'worksheet-less' activities to engage students. This is a sheet - but it can be downloaded onto ipads and it's just giving the students four activities to do: film a shopping-channel advert, create a Kahoot (or similar) quiz, write a murder-mystery story and create the 'treasured possessions' of King Cogidubnus. It can be adapted for any museum trip!

Roman Calendar Assignment

Roman Calendar Assignment

Our calendar is based on Julius' Caesars Roman calendar. How did the Roman calendar work? This assignment teaches students 1) the origins of our modern calendar 2) how to read and write Roman numerals 3) how to read and write Roman dates in step-by-step explanations and practice assignments 4) interesting facts about Romans and their daily life related to their calendar It includes 5 ready-to-use pages full of explanations and small assignments, and an answer key to all the assignments. This is a great combination with my resource "Roman Calendar", which is a printable calendar with all the dates of each month written according to the Roman system.
