Year 7 2017 SOW Spring Term Africa 7) Biomes of Africa [SEN and High ability] WITH ANSWERS

This lesson centres around biomes of Africa. Each question within the PowerPoint has ANSWERS and relates to the NEW Geog.1 textbook at KS3 but in this lesson we use the documents attached. The lessons begins with a simple food chain for Africa. The second settler is called 'Street View' with students creating a food chain using key terms. This aims to introduce new terminology and is also suitable for low ability. Both activities have ANSWERS. Before the starter, to hook students into learning play them the video attached 'The Very Best of Walk on the Wild Side'. The starter is Continental Dash is using the World Map and post-it notes with the different biomes put on them. The students need to find the post-it notes and place on the World map in the correct place before the timer ends. Use the Geog.1 books to aid them or the IWB to aid low ability learners. This activity can be used as a settler the following lessons to recap learning. The main is a group-based activity (seen opposite). For low ability pair higher students with SEN. I target the roles with certain students but give higher ability more choice. The aim is to use the three different biomes attached as worksheets to create an A3 concept map in the students' group. There are role cards for the activity and a chance to find out the facts from the other biomes. I usually give two lessons to do this activity with mini-presentations (see my FREE presentation template). There is an extension activity for higher sets introducing them into distribution questions for GCSE with ANSWERS and SUCCESS CRITERIA. The other development is proclaim and explain in group presentations. The plenary is Anagrams with an Odd one out. ANSWERS are in the notes on the slide.

Lesson 3: Colonisation of Africa - KS3 Geography Africa Unit 2017

Begin with: - A review of Africa quiz and mention award winners. Then: 1. Go through the definitions of key terms, coloniasation, colony and imperialism. Pupils to match up correct definitions and write it down. 2. Go through the context of colonization in Africa. 3. Followed by pupils completing word fill task with regards to the context. 4. Pupils read through statements of the effects of colonisation and arrange these statements into advantages and disadvantages. Could complete this in groups to encourage discussion. 5. Pupils complete writing task, the effects of colonisation on Africa. 6. Once complete, MAS to think about other key questions, if Africa wasn’t colonised and their overall view about colonisation. 7. Pupils move onto map work “who colonised Africa” Shade and label countries colonised by Britain. 8. Extension: do the same but this time shade and label countries colonised by France. 9. H/W: Pupils play simulation game “Scramble for Africa” and complete the follow up worksheet.

Lesson 2: Challenging perceptions of Africa - KS3 Geography Africa Unit 2017

1. Pre-starter task “How many legs does the elephant have?” followed by “What can you see?” 2. Begin discussion that not everything is quite as we see it – link to perceptions of Africa. 3. Pupils write down three words on three post-its associated with Africa. This will be used towards the end of the lesson to reflect on. 4. Discuss the actual size of Africa – bring in idea of Mercator maps and size disparities of continents. 5. Mental images task – pupils look at the images and complete their work sheet. 6. Define stereotype – follow up with the infographics of Africa to further challenge the stereotypes. 7. Pupils rewrite three words on another set of posts it notes – has these words changed from their original ones? Why? If it hasn’t, why not? 8. Africa Quiz – to complete individually. H/W for MAS – Extended writing task. Describe how perceptions and images of Africa can be misleading. Please review :)

1. Two-minute thinking followed by discussion of the difference between a country and continent. 2. Once definition is secure, pupils label the seven continents. 3. Whole class discussion describing the location of Africa, try to illicit key terms. 4. This is followed by pupils writing a description of the location of Africa. Peer asses. 5. Present data on the continents population and land mass and discuss with class any comparisons that can be made. 6. This is followed by pupils completing the true/false statements based on the data. 7. Using an atlas, pupils try to determine the African countries using the clues. 8. Extension activity: pupils plot a graph comparing population by continents. Homework: pupils try to learn as many of the African countries and their capital cities as well as their flags for a quiz following lesson. Includes differentiated worksheets for Lower Ability Students.
