Valentine (Carol Ann Duffy) and I wanna be yours (John Cooper Clarke)

Valentine (Carol Ann Duffy) and I wanna be yours (John Cooper Clarke)

This whole lesson (with slides you can print out for worksheets) explores the idea of extended metaphors and figurative devices in both Valentine - by Carol Ann Duffy - and I wanna be yours - by John Cooper Clarke. This then culminates in students creating their own valentine poetry. When I used to teach this lesson, I would actually bring an onion into class and cut it up for the initial reading of ‘Valentine’ - made a stink but definitely got my students interested! Hope you enjoy and please feel free to browse my other resources - a lot of which are free as I understand us teachers work far too hard already!

PARCC Aligned Practice Test Activities Poetry and Informational Text (Grade 7) (Prove IT 2.0)

PARCC Aligned Practice Test Activities Poetry and Informational Text (Grade 7) (Prove IT 2.0)

Included is a PARCC -Aligned practice test including informational text and poetry comparison. The questions involve the following areas: - Main idea - Two Part questions (Parts A and B) - textual evidence - Text structure - theme - context clues - similarities and differences What makes this activity so much more valuable is that is includes the Whole Brain strategy of Prove It 2.0 strategies. This technique encourages the students to indicate whether EACH ANSWER CHOICE is correct or incorrect based on the text. The students must write a response in their own words for all answer choices. This strategy allows the students to think about their way of thinking through verifying or justifying their answer choices with textual evidence. This technique has worked beautifully for my students and has been proven to improve standardized test scores. Educator TIP: It is even more beneficial for the students to talk about their answer choices with higher order thinking discussion stems: " I think that answer choice A is incorrect because, according to the text, ________________________________. " In essence, seeing, thinking, and speaking helps to bring about a critical thinking experience, that eventually, with practice, become an effective tool in comprehending complex text. Last Day - Memories

Last Day - Memories

Children in year 6 are often asked to write something for their final assembly. I have created two sheets. Sheet one should give them ideas about what to write. Sheet 2 may read Poetry Aid but the vast vocabulary can also be used to help them write their memory sheet. Hope these two sheets will inspire the children to write either a piece of prose or to have a go at writing a poem.

POETRY BATTLE (KS3/4/5) A quiz testing poetry skills, terms and creativity. Full lesson.

POETRY BATTLE (KS3/4/5) A quiz testing poetry skills, terms and creativity. Full lesson.

Made to re-cap poetry terms, structure, and getting the students to think creatively about poetry. I have used this with Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 as poetic terms never change and the students higher up can simply access the creative tasks to a higher level. Students have always been very engaged and have also learned a lot from it. I teach this lesson as a team game. Students are in groups of 4 to work through the rounds and we keep track of points as we go. This takes at least 1 lesson, and could take longer depending on the ability/creativity of your students. Ready to teach.
