Coding, Collaboration, Communication and Curriculum in Finland

Coding, Collaboration, Communication and Curriculum in Finland

Computer science nurtures problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. The world is increasingly run by software and we need more diversity among those people who are building it. Not all students will be software developers or writers, doctors or translators, but we are already surrounded by technology and even more so in the future. The main point is to provide a basic understanding of society, living environment and fields of science and thus provide equal opportunities for all the learners. Understanding how computers work and how to use them well, gives children skills and knowledge to succeed in global competition and life generally. Year 3 pupils were not only taught the basics of coding, but they were taught to teach other classes the magic of coding. They have taught around 200 other children and teachers in Finland and India (via video) the Magic of Coding. You can learn more about the Coding Ambassadors here or email for an online course including videos and lesson plan for collaborative coding lessons.

Countdown to Exams

Countdown to Exams

This numerical 'countdown to exams' chart begins at 99 and counts down to 1. The rows of numbers are various shades of colours from green (99) to red (1). I use this in my classroom to countdown to exams with the colours intended to indicate when/how much revision students will be doing. Can be printed and laminated to use on a classroom wall.

End of Year (Anonymous) Student Reflective Survey

End of Year (Anonymous) Student Reflective Survey

Check out this 12 question reflective survey where students can express their feelings in regard to the culture of the classroom. With a focus on leadership, empowerement, and general teacher review. This survey holds great potential for teachers to gain insight into how students feel in your class, how they feel about you, and how they feel about themselves. This can easily be used as a benchmark throughout the year, so changes can be implemented. It provides a great opportunity to meet the needs of all students!

#1Lib1Ref - How to give Wikipedia a present for its birthday!

#1Lib1Ref - How to give Wikipedia a present for its birthday!

Wikipedia celebrates its 17th birthday on January 15th 2018. To mark the occasion, the Wikimedia Library is calling on educators, librarians and anyone who ever uses Wikipedia all around the world to add one reference to Wikipedia to backup a fact that needs it (marked with 'Citation Needed') between Jan 15th and Feb 3rd 2018. Because any citation to a reliable source is a benefit to Wikipedia readers worldwide. And it only takes a few minutes to share open knowledge. This video demonstrates where to find out about #1lib1ref, how to use the Citation Hunt tool to identify a random snippet on Wikipedia that needs a citation... and how to go about finding & adding a reliable source in order to change that citation needed to citation added! For more information on the #1lib1ref campaign please visit: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref
