KS3/text level Spanish Reading arrow-whole lesson introduction to reading strategies

KS3/text level Spanish Reading arrow-whole lesson introduction to reading strategies

This tried and tested approach to reading provides a visual strategy which can be applied to a wide variety of texts in a second language or in English, improving not only language skills, but also general literacy. Particularly useful when exploiting authentic materials, it can equally be applied to more traditional texts and, once embedded, enables students of all ages to work successfully with more complex source materials than would otherwise have been the case. This resource models the strategy with a simple Spanish text, however it can be applied to texts of a wide range of difficulty. It includes a ten slide teaching presentation to introduce the strategy, comprehensive teaching notes accompanied by thumbnails of all the materials, plus student sheets and the strategy arrow, which can be laminated for repeated use. The resource is also available modelled with a French text and a German text.

Spanish Cultural Unit Plan - Language through Music: Latinoamerica by Calle13

Spanish Cultural Unit Plan - Language through Music: Latinoamerica by Calle13

The idea of Language Through Music is to learn Spanish by looking at modern popular hits from the Latin American music world. Songs are chosen following a specific criteria. They will generally cover topics of historical/social/political interest tackling issues affecting modern Latin American society, thereby creating opportunity for discussion and practice of oral skills. Furthermore it this gives the teacher the possibility interlink a wider range of activities within the same lesson/set of lesson. Some songs may be chosen due to a particularly interesting use of language and/or presence of particular expressions that are worth looking at in detail. Due to copyright reasons I cannot include the original audio file with the material, however all of the songs will be widely available on the net/Youtube/iTunes and I will provide a working link. The use of realia such modern songs in the learning process will give the student more of a feel of real-world application of his language skills as well as an enriching cultural experience in itself. In depth analysis of the song LATINOAMERICA” by Calle 13 feat. Toto La Momposina, Maria Rita & Susana Baca This song indirectly touches the topic of American Imperialism and its impact on Latin America, through the masterful use of metaphors and symbologies related to Latin American identity. Includes: - Full Lyrics text of the song - Comprehension & Analysis questions - Further exercise focusing on the interpretation of the metaphors used - Reading comprehension text on American Imperialism and Latin America - A Mind map outlining important points for a class discussion on the topic. Song "Dale la vuelta a la tortilla"

Song "Dale la vuelta a la tortilla"

I created these activities as part of a GCSE enrichment session where not everyone was a Spanish student- lots of group work and peer support! It can also be used for an AS cultural/media discussion if you modify the follow-up activities. The song is full of references to participants' backgrounds, ideal for media research. The theme of the song is very positive so it may be just a good way of cheering up your students! I used it to revise countries and how to form nationality words. Students guess/say aloud the different nationalities and jobs that these celebrities hold. Afterwards I added some tasks on simple subject specific vocabulary related to jobs. Even without using the song you can use the video to encourage spontaneous speaking and review physical description, clothes, etc.
