Castle picture, detailed, looking in, up, round... black/white A5 (approx)

Castle picture, detailed, looking in, up, round... black/white A5 (approx)

This picture offers inspiration for creative writing, support for medieval history or castle study and colouring. It depicts an ancient, yet still creepily inhabited, crumbling castle. A mouse (or rat?), a fallen key, a twisty staircase, candlelight, a shadow at the casement window, a narrow passage, lit at the far end, a grand pillar, stone floors - they’re all there. I originally draw the picture to illustrate a castle poem in a book of mine, now out of print.

Treasure Map Alliteration Game (Yr1-6) + Guide for Use

Treasure Map Alliteration Game (Yr1-6) + Guide for Use

This is a fun, imagination-firing, creative writing activity, centred on a pirate’s treasure map. It has proved popular with children of all ages and abilities in my workshops. It can be written individually or shared verbally, the challenge being to think up nouns to fit the gaps, with one rule: they have to start with the same letter as that of the starter word (e.g. Forest of Feet). The Guide sheet offers lists of words to prompt for - if needed, and suggestions for embellishing the activity. The challenge of thinking up nouns starting with the same letter as the starter word - and on a treasure map - motivates even reluctant writers to have a go at this mind-stretching, language-enriching game.

Ladybird Picture Poem Frame, Early Yrs/Yr1 + Guidance Notes

Ladybird Picture Poem Frame, Early Yrs/Yr1 + Guidance Notes

This resource comprises a picture-poem frame and a one-page guide for the teacher’s use. Both are in PDF format. The picture-poem frame features a huge ladybird (hand-drawn). Above it is an opening phrase: ‘This ladybird is’, inviting describing words on the short, thick lines in and around the insect. Below it, there is a line for a simile, with the starting phrase ‘He is as red as’. The sheet is designed for emergent writers and newly independent ones, also providing colouring opportunities. The guidance notes offer tips for preparing children for the activity, followed by lists of words and simile ideas to prompt for. Some thoughts about the colouring aspect are also included. Although principally a Literacy activity, this resource supports other areas of the EYFS curriculum too, such as Understanding the World and Expressive Art & Design. It has been been successfully tried and tested in classrooms.

'Fish are...' Writing & Colouring Sheet + Guide

'Fish are...' Writing & Colouring Sheet + Guide

This resource comprises a writing/colouring sheet + a one-sheet guide for teachers, both black-and-white, PDFs. The fish-themed writing and colouring sheet - or picture poem frame - is a simple and attractive activity for EYFS. It offers a single line (at the top) for descriptive writing, with the starter words ‘Fish are’. The space below is filled with a large, hand-drawn scene of a patterned fish under the sea. The guide provides a list of relevant words to prompt for as needed, and two suggestions for extending the literacy aspect. The resource supports multiple curricular areas, in particular: Literacy, Expressive Arts & Design, Physical Development (fine motor skills) and Understanding The World. The attractive design has been proven to motivate young children to think up and try to write descriptive words for the fish, and to experiment with colours and pencil control. Enthuse children in the topic first, perhaps by showing pictures or videos of fish in the sea, looking at some in an aquarium, reading a story about a fish and enacting them together.

Attack the Block GCSE Film Studies scheme of work

Written by an experienced examiner and consultant, this booklet on Attack the Block, directed by Joe Cornish in 2008, provides a huge range of activities. Some of the work includes: the context of the production of the film, London, social housing, gang culture and the London Riots of 2011. Also includes key facts and information on the making of the film and systems for keeping notes during watching with templates using the Cornell notes system. There are also in-depth details on key scenes, dozens of screenshots from the film as well as images from other relevant areas that have influenced the film. You will also find a range of screenshots and screen grabs from other sci-fi films such as Blade Runner and Aliens. There are also screen shots from British films such as Harry Brown and A Clockwork Orange to aid and support the work on comparing film texts. The booklet also contains dozens of activities for students including mock exam questions, comprehension questions on location, characters and more. PLUS: guidance on how to analyse scenes from the film using hexagaonal learning and summary sheets to help with revision. Key scene analysis include links to the specific scenes or extracts, hosted permanently on YouTube, so you don’t even need a copy of the film to complete some of the tasks-again, perfect for students to complete! Many of the tasks included have also been designed to be peer or self assessed and there is a wide variety of solo work, paired work or group work catered for, with each activity described in detail at the beginning of each task. Your purchase will be for one zip file that contains Microsoft Word and Mac OSX versions so that you can edit and do as you like with, as well as unmarked PDFs ready for printing. This booklet has been written so that it can be used in a variety of ways; print and use as a ready-to-go scheme of work in a booklet. Maybe give to students as a detailed homework that can be completed alongside your own classroom work. It also works great for revision, either with individual task printed or again, as a whole booklet. Try printing individual pages as starters or plenaries, or even using the tasks as engaging resources for lessons built around key ideas of your own. This guide / ebook is designed to help in the delivery of GCSE Film Studies, focusing on Component 2 Global Film. This guide focuses on the key aspects of Film style / aesthetics as well as film language, as per the Eduqas Specification. Many thanks for taking a look and for any future purchases!

Alice In Wonderland Songs

Alice In Wonderland Songs

A collection of songs from the writings of Lewis Carroll - I’ve set all of the ‘Alice’ poems to music in a suitably bizarre way - so let me know if you need one that’s not featured here. These resources would be an excellent part of any work or presentation featuring the "Alice in Wonderland’ or ‘Through The Looking Glass’ stories.

Humpty Dumpty's recitation from 'Alice'

Humpty Dumpty's recitation from 'Alice'

This is Humpty Dumpty’s recitation set to a rather modern backing style. This would fit in with any module of working involving ‘Alice’ by Lewis Carroll. I’ve set all of the ‘Alice’ poems to music so let me know if there’s anything you are looking for.

The Mock Turtle's Song - The Lobster Quadrille

The Mock Turtle's Song - The Lobster Quadrille

The Mock Turtle’s Song from Alice In Wonderland, set to an unexpected tune - not a quadrille at all - but then the turtle was a mock turtle, so nothing is as expected! It’s a very infectious melody and this piece would fit in with any study or presentation of Lewis Carroll’s work. I’ve set all of his ‘Alice’ poems to music, so if you need anything just ask!

Jabberwocky Song

Jabberwocky Song

Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky, set to music. Can be used to augment any drama or performing work, or as an introduction to any work on Alice. I’ve set all of Lewis Carroll’s poems to music, in as bizarre a way as possible - if you need music to any of his other work , let me know. It would be a great Performing Arts project for the pupils to devise their own presentation of the stories using the songs as a framework.
