This unit is designed to educate students on the 12 most common religions in the world today through web-based research: Baha’i, Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism and Zoroastrianism; while at the same time facilitating the development of opinions on spiritual matters, teaching tolerance, and strengthening student writing through daily prompts and a final creative writing project. A final assessment utilizing student research is provided. There are 16 days of PowerPoint presentations to guide the learning leading up to the creative writing project. Each lesson opens with a higher order thinking question designed to develop opinions and teach tolerance. Questions are presented in Spanish and English, with the option to edit out the Spanish. The file “writing rubric” contains a student friendly rubric based on the WIDA writing rubric which should be used daily to evaluate student writing and allow opportunities for teachers to conference with students on how to move to the next level. Following a period where students write their answers, students should be encouraged to share their answers orally and respond to each other, allowing an opportunity for students to engage in a class discussion around the questions.

AQA RE GCSE Spec A - Key Teachings Sheet for use with Paper 2 Themes and Religion and Life Teachings

AQA RE GCSE Spec A - Key Teachings Sheet for use with Paper 2 Themes and Religion and Life Teachings

This resource is ideal for establishing some baseline and universal teachings for use in the Thematic Studies Paper 2 part of the new AQA RE Spec A. I have focused on Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism and just given a few teachings which can be applied anywhere in the course. I have laminated this for my year 11's who are finding it really useful when preparing answers for Q3, Q4 and Q5. On the reverse is a list of the possible comparisons that can be used in the 4 mark 'contrasting' question, and the 3 areas of focus for each unit that our College is covering. It would be very easy to edit it and include different religions or topics as you need to. I have also added a booklet which I provide to my students at the end of the topic so that they can see the specific teachings which relate to that unit of work and also how to construct the response to question 3, with the 'contrasting' views. More resources to follow if they are needed :)

Simple teachings for GCSE RS ethics-based Themes - Judaism

Simple teachings for GCSE RS ethics-based Themes - Judaism

This is a powerpoint presentation for a lesson which sits at the start of delivering the ethics Themes for GCSE RS. This is from a Judaism perspective. Whilst written for the AQA Themes, it does fit the same Themes for any of the exam boards. The point of the materials is to show students that they already know lots about the Themes, which they can use as they learn in more depth. It is also to show them that a few teachings go a long way. It is true that the exam boards want to see specific teachings for topics, and want students to apply those Themes, rather than using the same few generic quotes every time. However, it is also true that those generic quotes do have a multitude of applications as they are what the religion boils down to in its basic moral guidance. So this powerpoint is based on that latter fact! Use the powerpoint in its entirety with students who need to speed through the course for whatever reason, or with students who need a simpler chunk of knowledge. This gives a baseline from which to work in studying in depth, and one to fall back on if exam anxiety kicks in. Within the powerpoint there are notes for each slide as guidance, and there are some suggestions for different ways of using the materials.
