Whole Primary School PE Curriculum Map

This resource has been carefully created to help Primary Schools be prepared and fit for purpose for any Ofsted inspection. I have recently ( just before lockdown) had the experience of an Ofsted ‘Deep Dive’ PE inspection. The new framework is just an important in PE as other subjects and I have created this resource partly because we did well in our inspection but also because I realised we could do better after reflecting on the inspection experience. This resource gives examples of the subjects being taught in accordance with PE curriculum guidance and crucially provides reasoning and validation as why the subject is being taught, what knowledge children gain and what Padagogy is being used. These 3 factors of ‘Why, knowledge and Padagogy’ are ( from my experience) the key focus for Ofsted. This Map also provides clarity and focus to help both medium and long term planning, there is a working example of a long term yearly PE plan. It also has in-depth explanations as to how PE supports pupil premium and vulnerable children and PSHE. The mapping shows the key progressions form each key stage and gives highlights what is being taught and how this benefits children’s physical and mental development. It can be edited to fit your school’s profile as most school’s have their own personal mission statements and values. This resource does provide links to cultural, religious and British values as an example of how PE links to these subjects. I’ve loaded it as a Power point so that it can used in staff meetings.

Throwing and Catching Activities in PE Aged 5-11

This activity is a good introduction for younger children learning throwing and catching for the first time. It is also use as a warm up for older children before sports such as cricket and rounders. The activity is fairly quick to set up. It is easy to adapt to all abilities and adds a fun and competitive element into PE.

This PE Curriculum Map is a Primary School resource. I have recent experience of an Ofsted PE deep dive inspection. I have developed this resource as a consequence of my schools Ofsted inspection ( we were deemed outstanding in PE). This Curriculum Mapping will provide clarity and clear guidance to show what subjects are being taught, why they are being taught the subjects and what knowledge children are acquiring. Critically, this map will provide validation as to why your school is teaching them, and how the children benefit physically and mentally from learning the subjects your school is teaching. The Curriculum Mapping also provides links to the Pedagogy that contributes towards improving learning and progression in PE. There are numerous links to theories and research to provide some substance and evidence to validate your choice of subjects. The mapping also highlights what knowledge is being attained and provides evidence to show how your PE curriculum is supported PSHE, Pupil Premium children, vulnerable children, cultural Christian and British values. The map also provides in-depth explanations of the progressions in PE between each key stage from Early Years up to Higher Key Stage 2. This Map will contribute towards improving attainment and understanding of the concepts that help develop outstanding PE.
Statement Based PE Assessment for Year 2 Children

Statement Based PE Assessment for Year 2 Children

This Statement based PE assessment has the primary goal of making assessment quick, easy and clear. The template can be adapted and changed to suit any school’s curriculum, the template I have done includes fictitious names to provide you with a clear understanding of how it all works. The curriculum subjects are real, although your school may do different subjects as schools do have the freedom to choose what subjects they do as long as they fit into the curriculum guidance. The template has 6 half terms of subjects already done with the statements for a range of subjects such as dance, gymnastics, fundamental balls skills, athletics, striking and fielding and sending and receiving. For example, the statement for fundamental ball skills reads ‘can kick a ball straight’ or a statement for gymnastics might read ‘can roll forwards and backwards’. Depending on your medium and long term planning you will may need to align the assessment so that it fits your school’s curriculum requirements. WHY USE STATEMENT BASED ASSESSMENT FOR KS1? Using this system makes assessment quicker and easier than some other systems, it is clear for others to follow and see what your children are capable of doing and therefore track their progression. If you’re job sharing or you have outdoor providers or a TA, they can use this system and although you’re not doing the lessons you can still look at the statements and have a clear profile of what each child can do. This then makes the job of relaying this information to parents and other stakeholders much easier and can be simply translated to reports. I’ve put boys in blue and girls in red, there’s no particular gender reason for this, however by using different colours it makes it clearer to identify if there are gender trends emerging regarding mastery of skills. You could also use a colour scheme if you wanted to focus on pupil premium children or children with SEN plans to track their progress. The information for the statements can inform future planning and delivery of PE and will provide your school with a clear picture of children’s progress.

Primary PE and Covid19 Stratigic Response

This is a resource which was presented to Ofsted in an recent (Covid19 Response Inspection) to demonstrate our school’s strategic response to inactivity and filling in the skills gaps caused by Covid19 lockdown. This is a resource that shows how we re-organised our curriculum and how we have made changes to prioritise skill development and fitness.
