Wallace and Grommit’s Cracking Contraptions is used as a stimulus for the children to write an explanation about how the Snoozatron works. Their final task is to create their own Cracking Contraption and to write an explanation about how it works.

Discussions on how the descriptions often reflect the characters’ feelings. Big focus on identifying direct speech in a text. The unit culmintes in the children writing a newspaper report describing the Space Creature’s arrival and the Iron Man’s challenge. The unit contains full resources needed to present the topic of discarded plastic bags and the possibilities of recycling to children in year 3 and 4. It includes a learning journey, possible weekly lesson plans, a PowerPoint presenting the book and another which focuses on how to write a balanced argument. Each session is based on learning objectives from the Hampshire reading and writing phase assessments. There is a focus on the use of descriptive language. They are encouraged to analyse sections of the book to see how Michael Morpurgo builds tension in his writing. The children have a chance to explore how characters are thinking and feeling with the use of Hot Seating. They study photos and video clips of jungles to inspire their written descriptions. They learn about using ‘show not tell’ to infer how characters are feeling. The unit includes three powerpoints: Modal Verbs, Adding Subordinate Clauses and Descriptive Sentence Making. The culmination of this unit involves planning and writing a ‘hunter’ piece based on the structure of Chapter 10. The children are also given the opportunity to replicate the skills they have developed in this piece of writing in an assessment task based on the short tale ‘Something Fishy’, which can be found on the Literacy Shed. Although my unit contains 8 weekly plans, I was not working a 5 day week. It is, however a fairly extensive unit which has enough material to last 4/5 weeks. It was very worthwhile making it so lengthy, as I found that the children made major progress in their writing. Aspects included are diary writing, firework and volcanic landscape descriptions, character comparisons and journey mapping. The middle section of the learning journey diverts from the book and changes the focus to non fiction texts. This English unit is inspired by The Lighthouse short film, found on The Literacy Shed. Children focus on the difference between simple and compound sentences and using expanded noun phrases. They learn to organise their ideas using a storyboard and to write paragraphs around a theme. The plan gives a day by day guide and resources are included for the seven session. Resources used to explore the use of expanded phrases involve the colour coding of adjectives, nouns, verbs and prepositional phrases to help clarify the pupils’ knowledge of these terms. PowerPoint presentations are included, which carefully go through the process of structuring expanded noun phrases.

This unit provides an insight to Stories from Different Cultures. It begins with Africa Is Not A Country and comparison with the UK, then explores the tale of Mufaro’s two daughters, who react in different ways to the king’s search for a wife - one is aggressive and selfish, the other kind and dignified. The children are encouraged to understand and interpret common morals/proverbs, write instructions on how to be a good person and gain rewards and write an alternative ending for a story, with a different moral/message. There are opportunities to identify conjunctions, clauses and adverbials in sentences, to convert dialogue into direct speech and and develop their use of the possessive apostrophe. In this unit, Stone Age Boy, we begin by making predictions, then move on to focusing on using different sentence structures: simple compound and complex. A guided reading focus is included, with cross curricular (history) links and the children study features of a non-chronological report. The unit culminates in the children writing their own non-chronological reports on a Stone Age Animal.

The Day the Crayons Quit is a book which children love. It presents a great opportunity for them to learn to write persuasively, as there are lots of persuasive letter examples in this book . Children are encouraged to compare and contrast similarities and differences in characters’ personalities and to analyse how they are persuasive in different ways. They learn to use compound sentences and rhetorical questions for effect. They focus on the structure of letter writing and the culmination of the unit involves them writing persuasive letters to Andy from one of the Toy Story characters.
