Virtual Photosynthesis Experiment

(0)
Power Point Slide Show (ppsx) file for the virtual execution of Elodia photosynthesis experiments. The slide show is interactive to allow for transitions between explanations, setups and reference slides. The simulation emulates colour change of Bromothymol Blue indicator over a duration of 30 hours as indicator of carbon dioxide consumption. Data generated by this simulation is estimated and does not reflect actual values obtained in experiments. Experimental setups comprise variations of temperatures, distances of light source and light intensities (emulated LUX meter measurement). Controls are represented by emulating Bromothymol Blue indicator colours of setups without plant in both light and dark conditions, and with plant in the absence of any light.

Biology: Virtual Experiment (Osmosis)

This is an interactive simulation of an osmosis practical, allowing data collection from repeat trials with values based on real measurements in a lab. The interactive requires application of science inquiry skills, such as reading scales including measuring liquids, and observations relevant to identifying random errors. A matching template for a scientific report with prompts for application of all conventions is available.

PCR DNA amplification simulation

The slides are interactive, and the yellow words “Elongation”, “Annealing” and “Denaturing” in the cycle map visual are interactive to jump straight to those steps. Click on the black house and cycle icons to also portal back to the start screens or the next step in the cycles. Otherwise, just hit enter/return or forward arrows to proceed. I have also made “manipulatives” slides for students to practice the PCR steps. matching Nearpod Activity https://share.nearpod.com/e/mlmciwM7c9
Biology: DNA/RNA gel electrophoresis simulation (interactive)

Biology: DNA/RNA gel electrophoresis simulation (interactive)

(0)
Interactive power point slide show (ppsx) that simulates the setup, loading and running of an agarose gel for the separation of DNA/RNA fragments and estimation of sizes by comparison to a DNA/RNA ladder with bands of known fragment sizes. Viewers interact with equipment, control transitions, and receive feedback on choice selections. This resource is ideally suited to demonstrate, model, explore or assess Australian VCE Biology Unit 4 content and skills, or similar curricula in other regions.

Meiosis vs Mitosis

This slide show illustrates the conceptual differences between meiosis and mitosis that underpin the necessity for haploid and diploid karyotypes, homologue chromosomes and sister chromatids.

Year 12 Biology VCE Unit 3 Outcome 1 School-Based Assessment Task. Based on virtual respiration experiment https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/biology-virtual-experiment-respiration-12290080. Written test (70 min) using scaffolded questions to assess content knowledge of Unit 3 AOS1 and key scientific skills using observations from practicals.

Body Systems (Differentiated Learning Tasks)

(0)
Set of learning tasks and reflections for the study of the digestive and respiratory systems. Students work from lower to higher order levels of understanding based on Bloom’s taxonomy. Reflection prompts for each level guide metacognitive strategies. The teacher must suggest or provide relevant resources to complete these tasks.

Biology: Virtual Experiment (Respiration)

(1)
This resource was designed for Australian VCE Biology Unit 3, AOS 1, outcome 1 requirements for a practical relating to cellular respiration. This is an interactive slide show for virtual measurements of respiration rates at different temperatures. A respirometer is shown with animated movement of a food colour droplet in the glass tube pipette. A thermometer is displayed, and a timer starts on click. Students can take measurements for 3 fixed temperature setups. Students need to read the scales of the pipette and thermometer, and keep records of time points. Total duration of simulation for each temperature set-up is 30 seconds. Students can restart the simulations and move between setups. A matching worksheet scaffolds all science skill applications from planning to data presentation.

Biology Photosynthesis Virtual Experiment Task Sheet

(0)
Assessment or hands-on learning task relevant to year 12 Biology (Australian VCE Unit 3) content knowledge about photosynthesis and factors affecting rates of photosynthesis, as well as key scientific skills including planning and conducting experiments, and data collection, analysis and presentation (types of data, errors, graphing conventions). This task requires use of the virtual photosynthesis experiment available here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/virtual-photosynthesis-experiment-12460019
