Important update on professional skills tests

Changes to the professional skills tests

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced today that it is replacing the existing professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy with a new system at the end of this recruitment cycle. Details of the new system will be announced by the DfE after the start of the 2019/20 academic year, until then we wanted to provide some clarity for anyone due to start teacher training or a route to QTS with Tes Institute.

School Direct initial teacher training starting in 2019

As these changes will come into effect from October 2019, the announcement will have no impact on your current offer for School Direct initial teacher training in September 2019.

You are still required to complete the Professional Skills Test in numeracy and literacy before your teacher training programme commences in September.

If you have yet to book your test, you can find more information via the skills test website. Tes Institute will continue to offer free Skills Test Help Clinics, with sessions still available in July.

If you have any questions, please contact please call on +44(0)203 194 3200 (option 2) or email sd-institute@tesglobal.com.

Straight to Teaching and Assessment Only

For our Straight to Teaching and Assessment Only learners starting in September and beyond, it is likely that your QTS assessment will occur after the new system is introduced. We are working with the DfE on the format of this and will relay details to you as soon as we have more information.

If you are currently on a Straight to Teaching programme or Assessment Only route and are due to be assessed for QTS via the Assessment Only route before November 2019, you may still need to take the professional skills tests, depending on when your assessment is due to happen. We will continue to offer our free online skills tests clinics to help you prepare for them.

If you would like to speak to us about this please call on +44(0)203 194 3200 (option 2) or email institute.admissions@tesglobal.com.
