Tes Institute are running a series of FREE online sessions designed to help candidates for initial teacher training prepare for the professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy.

These tests represent a final hurdle for many teacher training applicants and even though the Government has now lifted the cap on the number of resits, the professional skills tests will need to be passed before you can start training to become a teacher.

Numeracy help sessions: mental arithmetic and calculator sessions

Mirroring the format of the numeracy skills test, we will run two sessions that will help you to prepare for mental arithmetic and calculator questions.

These sessions will cover:

  • The application of general arithmetic and key mathematical concepts (percentages, decimals, fractions) in a test environment
  • Tips and techniques on how to analyse and manipulate numerical and statistical data within test questions
  • Worked examples of each type of test question
  • Strategies on how to cope with timed question in test conditions

Literacy help session

This single session will take you through what you might expect to see in the literacy skills test and prepare you for tackling questions in test conditions.

The session will cover:

  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Comprehension

When should you take your professional skills tests?

Once you have prepared and feel ready to take the skills tests, you can book a test appointment online. If you are on a traditional teacher training route, such as School Direct or University-led PGCE, you will need to take and pass both tests before you can begin your training. If you are due to begin or have started Tes Institute's Straight to Teaching route, you can take the tests during the programme but will need to pass them both before you can be assessed for QTS at the end of the programme.

Feedback from the sessions

Fantastic teaching in the sessions, very interactive with time to try questions and full explanations of the correct answers and also where people may typically go wrong. I had little confidence to take my numeracy skills test which I had book two weeks after the clinics. These sessions really increased my confidence and two weeks later I passed!
